The Official AniTAY Summer 2020 Sequel Guide

Illustration for article titled The Official AniTAY Summer 2020 Sequel Guide

Summer has come, and for obvious reasons the bikini time has been postponed until next year. While we eagerly await for better times and show our beach bod, let’s try to forget all the ugliness of the world with some anime!

Our list is shorter this time, but filled with lots of exciting things like the big return of Re:Zero and Sword Art Online, plus some others!

Also, some entries already appeared in the Spring Sequel anime article, but delays have caused us to move the shows to this list!

For the Hype-Meter, this time we catered to the kid inside of us and chatted with them for a bit. After asking us what anime we should expect, we answered by explaining it to them in a way a 3-year old would understand, so here is the easy explanation!

Also, as you know, we don’t put where a show will appear since the streaming services typically announce such things few days before (or even at the premiere day) so please understand and enjoy!

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Season 2

Preview Author: Doctorkev

Studio: White Fox

Genre: Fantasy, Isekai, Tragedy

About the series: 17-year-old Japanese NEET Natsuki Subaru is magically sucked into a medieval fantasy world populated by dragons, elves, and witches. He must use his wits and master his innate heroic potential to – stop me if you’ve heard this before. Yes, the setup for Re:Zero sounds like hundreds of other generic garbage “isekai” (transported to another world) anime shows; however, its unusual structure and intelligent use (if not deconstruction) of the genre’s common tropes elevates it head and shoulders above its more forgettable peers.

Subaru is a useless hero with no special wisdom or skills. He is completely out of his depth and fails repeatedly, as one probably would if thrust unprepared and ignorant into an alien culture. Any confidence in his assumed knowledge of genre conventions is quickly beaten out of him by a series of brutal, humiliating deaths. In a way, Subaru is special, in that he can return “save-point” style to an earlier period of time after he dies. Which happens a lot.

Subaru entangles himself in the life of beautiful white-haired half-elf Emilia, and their relationship is at times sweet and at others excruciating as Subaru’s assumptions and reckless behaviour cause her deep consternation. He’s unable to explain his ability to “return by death” because of the witch’s curse placed upon him. Unfortunately, multiple dark powers conspire to kill Emilia – as a candidate for the vacant throne of the kingdom, plus as a member of a hated minority (the culture’s feared satanic witch Satella is also a half-elf) – so Subaru must die repeatedly to learn via trial-and error how to protect the life of his beloved.

Full of light humour that swiftly turns to deep despair, Re:Zero’s tone is (deliberately) wildly inconsistent, with stunning set-pieces, moments of painful irony, and soul-crushing heartbreak. With season 2 finally upon us after a break of almost 4 years, hopefully we’ll finally hear the answer to that eternal question: Who is Rem?

Easy Explanation: Random NEET wants to be a hero in another world. He has found his weakness… His own weakness.
