Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night’s decay
Ushers in a drearier day.*

Oh! Hi! I didn´t see you coming since I was too busy reading a poem about fall… What is that? It´s anime sequels what you want?! Well my dear reader, this is your lucky day! Because we have sequels in big quantities! The big finale of a beloved Shounen series, or maybe the new season of a highly anticipated Light Novel adaptation… Or, if you are like me, dear reader; you might be expecting the big return of some amazing kunoichis who have very big assets with them! Whatever the case, the sequels are here!
This time around, the hype that these series gets is so much that it couldn´t be contained or measured on simple numbers, it was truly big! So big that it was comparable to a Gundam! So following that logic, we decided to use Gundams to measure the Hype the series has! So without further ado, here are the sequels!

A Certain Magical Index III

Preview Author: Raitzeno

Type: Sequel

Studio: J.C. Staff

Genre(s):Action, Sci-fi, Fantasy, High School, Rom-Com, Harem, LN Adaptation

About the Series: Academy City is the world’s premier site for the growth and research of the scientifically enhanced humans commonly known as espers. In a certain high school, an incredibly unlucky boy named Touma Kamijou is just trying to get through life in one piece. As a Level 0, all testing finds absolutely nothing abnormal about him, outside of the minor but not exactly rare defect of having failed to develop any sort of esper power. But Touma does have something special: his right hand is host to a phenomenon known as Imagine Breaker, an almighty ability that annihilates anything ‘supernatural’ that gets within a fraction of an inch of it. Touma knew it stopped esper powers entirely, which is why the testers got “no reaction” from him, one day he discovered that it stops “magic” as well. When a young amnesiac nun named Index appeared on his balcony, Touma was suddenly thrust into a part of the world he didn’t think existed, a world of magic where major faiths actually pack a punch, alchemy and Kabbalah are facts of life, and even mundane activities can be turned into magical rituals - all hidden just below the surface of the normal world, and engaged in a war against the scientific world of Espers, with neither being ‘the good guys’.

Advertisement

A Certain Magical Index is a fantastic story about a pack of wildcards. While Touma is the main character, the expansive supporting cast brings this intriguing setting to life in an impressive and vibrant manner. By this point in the story, Touma has unofficially set up his own “third party” faction, caught in between the forces of magic and science, with members from each and holding no ultimate allegiance to either. His primary companions are Index, the nun with 108.000 magic tomes unwillingly stuffed in her brain, and Mikoto Misaka, known as the Railgun, the third most powerful of Academy City’s prestigious Level 5 espers. But it’s around this time that two characters who were previously side characters (and sometimes villains) ascend into co-protagonist territory. Accelerator, the #1 Level 5 esper, and Shiage Hamazura, an actual Level 0 with no powers whatsoever, are getting ready to storm onto the stage in a big way; they each have major story beats completely separate from Touma (including their own mini-harems), and each are integral to the overall plot.

Index Season 2 left the light novel readers hanging, having just introduced a key villain for a massive story arc right before ending. They assured us Season 3 was coming, but couldn’t tell us when - and they kept those assurances up for seven years, apologizing on stage multiple times every year that it wasn’t ready. Now, finally, the curtain rises on World War 3, where the existence of magic is revealed and the world will be forever changed.

If you’re lucky enough to have not experienced A-1 Pictures’ adaptation of the first season, then I urge you to carry on avoiding it at all cost. The first two games were squished into a 24 episode anime 2 years ago, and it is a painful adaptation which goes out of its way to ruin as many of the game’s trials as possible.

The show was essentially a glorified voiced Let’s Play with poor animation quality that makes you wonder if it was even A-1's D team working on it. You may notice the Studio is no longer A-1, so it may give you hope that this season won’t be as bad - but unfortunately CloverWork is a subsidiary of A-1, and the same director is at the helm for the project. Abandon all hope and please just play the games instead.

Gakuen Basara

Author: Requiem

Type: Spinoff

Studio: Brains Base

Genres: Action, Comedy, Schoolhouse Hijinks, Fashion

About the Show: Sengoku Basara was an adaptation of a series of video games about the battles between the biggest names of the Warring States period. It was less concerned with being historically accurate and more with being historically awesome.

Advertisement

Now we have Gakuen Basara, which recasts our samurai and ninja badasses as rival students at a high school that apparently has a very lax dress code when it comes to audacious headgear. Now, Date Masamune, Sanada Yukimura and the others aren’t trying to rule Japan, they’re just trying to be Student Council President. Recasting a show to be in a modern Japanese school?? THIS HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE.*

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind

Preview Author: Kinksy
Type: Sequel
Studio: David Productions
Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Shounen, Supernatural, Manliness!
About the Series: The 5th entry in the long running JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series continues 2 years after the end of Diamond is Unbreakable. Our story this time moves to Italy and follows new protagonist Giorno Giovanna - the son of previous Jojo’s villain Dio Brando - and his goal to rise to the top of the Nepalese Mafia in order to help people and bring integrity back to it.

Let’s be realistic here: if you’re on board the Jojo’s hype train, you’ll be watching this already, but in case you’re new here and need convincing to catch up on the previous 4 multi-cour seasons, then here we go.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a multi-generational epic following different members of the Joestar family from Victorian England to the present day. Because of this, even though it’s best enjoyed as a series, each part can stand alone and could be watched separately. From part 3 onwards, supernatural entities known as Stands are introduced, with each character having access to unique, creative and sometimes downright bizarre set of special abilities. The Stands in Part 5 do not disappoint and offer more fantastic battles that the series is famous for. This Part also includes one of the most powerful sta-

Sword Art Online: Alicization

Preview Author: Raitzeno

Type: Sequel

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Genre(s):Action, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, VRMMO, Mystery, Romance, LN Adaptation

About the Series: Kazuto Kirigaya is also known as Kirito, the Beater, the Black Swordsman. He cleared the death game of Sword Art Online, uncovered the brainwashing plot behind Alfheim Online, and solved the mystery of the Death Gun in Gun Gale Online. But when the real-life murderers behind the Death Gun escape, Kazuto is put in mortal danger in the real world for the first time. In SAO: Alicization, Kirito finds himself in a strange new world, with fragmented memories, new old friends, and no idea how things went wrong.

Advertisement

While the first two seasons of SAO covered 4 volumes each, Alicization is a massive story arc spanning 9 volumes. Because of that, we’ve now heard that SAO:A is going to be a whopping FOUR COURS LONG - that’s a full year of SAO. And that’s exactly what it needs to fully display its merits, because Alicization is where the overall plot kicks into high gear, so to speak. The stakes are higher, Kirito gets some much-needed character growth, and we start to see some of how the world will eventually transition from that of SAO to that of the chronologically-later series, Accel World. It’s generally hailed as a much better plotline than pretty much the entire series before it, with only the Mother’s Rosario arc having as much emotional impact.

It’s worth noting that Alicization is something of a departure from the power-fantasy tone of the series prior. If you’ve been thrown off of the series by the armies of salty naysayers and anime hipsters, you might want to give SAO one last chance this season.

Gundam-O-Hype-Meter: Sword Art Online is one of the most mainstream anime around these days and its new season will likely be no different. Generating scorn and love in equal measure from the purist and the casuals its ranking is Gundam Wing - Wing Zero Level. You either love or hate this series there is no in between.

Senran Kagura: Shinovi Master - Tokyo Youma-Arc

Preview Author: ShadowHaken

Type: Sequel

Studio: TNK

Genre(s): Action, Slice of Life, Ecchi, Comedy.

About the Series:In the shadows of this world, there are beings that move the strings in the world; these people use the Shinobi to make their goals in the shadows, those flowers that are destined to live and wither in the darkness of the world. The good Shinobi used by the government and the evil ones used by companies and rich people, these are the stories of some young girls training to live in the shadows of this world.

Advertisement

After an incident where the Shinobi students of Hanzo Academy and the students of the Hebijo Girls academy entered in a war; the peace has returned to their lives and both groups were able to even meet other Shinobi; now, near Christmas, two mysterious girls have appeared and it seems they have a plan to bring a Youma , a demonic being from hell, to Tokyo! A new war is about to begin; alliances will be made while betrayals lurks in the shadows; friendships will born and others will be broken; this is the sad fate of the Shinobi, and their story!

There is to say that while chronologically this takes place after the first season of the anime, it appears to be an adaptation of the mobile game “Senran Kagura: New Link” which takes place at the very least after the events of “Senran Kagura Shinovi versus”; although it could be after “Senran Kagura Peach beach splash” in any case, the knowledge needed seems to be rather small.

Gundam-O-Hype-Meter: The premier ecchi ninja series returns for those who like that kind of stuff. A guilty pleasure for those involved its hype is most like Gundam Build Divers -Zeromaru the ninja (SD) Gundam!
