With Gundam looking to have a big year in 2018 with multiple stories potentially including Gundam OO surprising potential sequel. I thought it would be a fun time to take a light hearted look and lighten things up and talk less about the war is hell side of Gundam and instead talk about the other draw to the series the gigantic robots and the big f***ing guns they carry. This is a list counting down some of the most amazing and apocalyptic weapons in the Gundam Universes.
A few criteria and ground rules I used for this. They don’t actually have to be “Guns” nor do damage directly, they do however have to be weapons systems capable of doing harm to others. Furthermore enhancement systems to the pilots do not count so no “Living Weapons” like New Types, Cyber New Types, chemically enhanced pilots ect that may be for a different time though. This also includes systems like the Zero System which only effect the pilot and not the Machine.
Please Note: As a list this is highly subjective I encourage everyone reading to tell me how wrong I am and what is right in the comments. Furthermore, this is not a ranking but the last entry is the most insanely OP of the bunch.
At its core the Twin Buster Rifle is quite literally a BFG, however its status as likely the most iconic BFG in Gundam secures its spot on this list. While other Gundams use similar weapons they did not have the impact both literally and figuratively of the Twin Buster Rifle. Able to take out a Colony in a single blast as shown in its itroductory appearance. The Twin Buster Rifle was raised from a mere tactical weapon to full on strategic super weapon.
It would be used time and time again throughout the series easily becoming the most iconic tool of one of the most popular suits ever animated. What makes the weapon even more fun as one can see above is in many ways the only thing that could bring down the Wing Zero was its own gun. As the stress of the Twin Buster Rifle on a weakened Wing Zero tears the suit to pieces almost killing the pilot in the process.
What you thought I’d stick to fictional weapons? Nope. Nukes are big and they are bad in every universe and Gundam is no exception. Any time nuclear power and its weaponization has played a role it has left death in its wake. This was notable in Gundam SEED whereby the entire conflict was due to a premptive nuclear strike living hundreds of thousands dead. There was then a retaliation with N-Jammers completely cutting nuclear power off from the Earth creating an economic depression. All around just like in the real world nuclear weapons are not a good thing.
Although superficially similar to the Twin Buster Rifle the Raiser Sword is much more interesting. This is due to the properties that makes up the weapons: the GN Particles. Effectively much like Minovsky Particles in the Universal Century GN Particles are much more malleable and variable in use and function.
The OO Raiser using the Twin Drive and Raiser Systems is able to unleash the full power of a Gundam in the AD Timeline. Its most impressive feat being the Raiser Sword, a controlled beam weapon that acts as a gigantic beam saber. Able to cut massive objects in half from thousands of kilometers away. By combining the power of a beam cannon and maintaining the stability and control of a saber the Raiser Sword is one of the most formidable weapons in any timeline.
The GENESIS System or more accurately the Gamma Emission by Nuclear Explosion Stimulate Inducing System (ZAFT loves Acronyms) is the ultimate super weapon of Gundam SEED. Using nuclear explosions to generate and then focus the resulting gamma radiation into a thermal nuclear beam GENESIS was literally a world killer.
Designed to strike the Earth from orbit the resulting ecological cataclysm would revert the Earth to an ice age. Effectively forcing the Earth into another ice age forcing humans into space. Giving ZAFT ultimate Victory of the Earthlings. The plan though was considered too monstrous even for ZAFT which resulted in a coup of the leaderships moderate “Cline Faction” setting up the stage for Gundam SEEDs final battle.
Mobile Armors are common element of most Gundam series where they tend to be inferior to standard Mobile Suits. This is subverted in Iron Blooded Orphans where Mobile Armors are the apocalyptic weapon of the Calamity War that informed Iron Blooded Orphans backstory. Piloted by Artificial Intelligence with the sole goal of destroying humans the Mobile Armors are effectively Terminators of the Gundam franchise.
Armed with the only beam weapons in all the timeline and armor that cannot be pierced by anything but Gundams even a single Mobile Armor is nearly impossible to bring down. It took the combined efforts of multiple Gundams and non-Gundam Mobile Suits with a well thought out and executed plan to bring the only one seen (Hashamel) down.
The Mobile Armors were the Angels of Death. Requiring the the Devilish Gundams to bring them to their knees. Of all the weapons on this list they are the most interesting in concept and have the potential for their own narrative.
Gundam has a long and illustrious history of attempting (sometimes succeeding) in using gigantic space based objects as improvised projectiles to end life on Earth. If its big, floats in space, and is in a Gundam there is a good likelihood somebody has thought of using it to cause a nuclear winter. From Operation Meteor to Char’s Counter Attack the threat of colony drops is an ever present threat.
What makes this so interesting compared to the other weapons on this list is that the object in question tends to be ones built to expand the possibility of life. It is why the duel nature of colony drops are so fun especially when used by complex characters like Char. Sacrificing a colony (and a planet) to ensure the survival of those who live on the colonies.
In one of the funnier twists of this list likely the most destructive weapon on this list is also the least dangerous sounding. Based on the Turn A and Turn X Gundams the Moonlight Butterfly System does not sound like much but its potential impact upon the whole solar system is unmatched in all of Gundam.
The Moonlight Butterfly if fully activated could potentially send nanomachines housed in the Turn A across half the solar system. Approximately from Earth to Jupiter turning all advanced techonology into dust. Anyone in space: dead. Anyone on the moon: dead. Really the potential impact of the Moonlight Butterfly is huge. The only thing that really keeps it in check is the series its in. As in Turn A Gundam the Earth is no more technologically advanced then the early 1900's with the Gundam’s being a relic of the Dark Ages. However in any other timeline the Moonlight Butterfly could easily end everything.
Anyways I hope you enjoyed this list. As you can tell it was not a very serious project, kind of just a fun little exercise. Tell me what you all think any BFG I missed out on? Let me know in the comments!
