Hello, everyone. It has come to my attention that the other top anime lists of shows from 2018 are not to your satisfaction. Thankfully, I am here to offer the correct list.

I have compiled a comprehensive list of all the good anime that aired this year, a list that conveniently contains 10 shows. The shows are not in order of best to worst or anything, but there is probably some voice in the back of my mind that created this order for a reason. All other anime not included that aired this year were either not worth my time or complete garbage.

10) A Place Further Than the Universe

A true classic that has to be on any true top 10 list, A Place Further Than the Universe had, objectively speaking, the best characters of any anime this year. Best girl Hinata Miyake was joined by several excellent background characters to create a heartwarming slice of life/coming of age story that is a masterpiece of our time.

9) Run with the Wind

A criminally underrated anime, Run with the Wind is perhaps even more appealing due to the fact that only the most high class anime viewers have probably managed to appreciate its brilliance. Watching the boys run in order to become a team worthy of the Hakone marathon is both exhilarating and immensely entertaining, although there are probably only a few people who really can reach a full understanding of what makes this show one of the best.

8) My Hero Academia 3

Perhaps the most popular show of the year, My Hero Academia has done what few shows can even dream of accomplishing: it became so popular that it was bad, before coming full circle to become one of the greatest anime of all time. If you thought All Might was badass in the first two seasons (and we all know you did), be prepared to fall in love all over again this season as he smashes his way into your heart once again with bestboi Deku in tow.

7) Golden Kamuy

Golden Kamuy offers a nuanced introductory portrayal of the Ainu inside of an interesting story. If you really want to know all about Hokkaido and the Ainu people, I recommend reading Brett Walker’s excellent book. Walker examines Hokkaido (or “Ezo”) not as a moving frontier but instead as a space in which the expanding control of the Japanese government collided with the various tribes of modern Japan’s northernmost island. In doing so, he gives voice back to the Ainu people by examining the region from the perspective of both sides.

6) Sword Art Online Alicization

One thing that the haters will never get is that Sword Art Online is one of the most important anime to come out of the past decade. It served as an excellent entry point into anime in its first season. However, if there’s one thing longtime fans and haters alike have clearly agreed on, it’s that this season of SAO is the series’ best. Be prepared to be wowed as Kirito once again defies all the odds and wins through the power of love or something.

5) My Hero Academia: Two Heroes

It really is incredible that the same series manages to appear on this list twice, and I think everyone will agree that it’s because My Hero Academia really deserves it. This movie hits all the right notes, literally. If you thought All Might was badass in the first two seasons (and we all know you did), be prepared to fall in love all over again om this movie as he smashes his way into your heart once again with bestboi Deku in tow. Make sure to see this one when you get the chance.

4) Tsuki ga Kirei

Honestly, if you don’t like/haven’t seen this one then you probably can’t really even begin to formulate a top list of anime this season. This show had some of the most real characters in a real setting that acted like real people and did real life things like in real life. The creators clearly understand the nature of humanity on a deeper level than you or I could possibly imagine.

3) Octopath Traveler

It was tough to decide where to put this one. Do I count one story, or all eight? In the end, I decided to count the six that I played, and when you multiply the goodness of one character’s story by six then you really have to put this one in the top 5 if you even want to be considered serious in this field. An incredible game that held my attention for most of the time. The only thing that would make it better would be this.

2) Bird Box

The latest in Netflix-original adaptations, Bird Box follows Angelina Jolie as she forces kids to wear blindfolds in order to prevent them from seeing some monster or something. It is often said that anime can’t do horror, and I really think that this movie is the one that finally proves all of those haters wrong. The fact that it is only #2 in this list really shows you how strong of a year this is. There is only one show that could possibly steal the top spot:

1) Darling in the FranXXX

Truly a masterpiece of our time, Darling in the FranXXXX manages to deconstruct the mecha genre, reconstruct it, and then deconstruct itself as it collapses into an ending that was probably one of the more satisfying conclusions to an anime in years, more or less. If you haven’t heard the phrase “Trigger saves anime again,” then you probably will just think, “Wow, Trigger just saved anime for the first time.” If you already know that phrase, then just add the word “again” at the end and you will be good to go. Needless to say, I highly recommend you watch Darling in the FranXXXXX.

Because I am generous, I have decided to impart some final anime wisdom upon you guys by including a list of bad anime that you should probably not bother with. This list is more serious than the above one, you should actually probably avoid all of these.

1) Goblin Slayer

This anime is about some schmuck that kills goblins for twelve episodes. He literally just wears shitty armor and accomplishes nothing. I’m not even sure you can describe a guy with so little of a personality as a real character. Needless to say, steer clear of this one.

2) Conception

You probably thought I would put this in the top list as a joke, but you would be wrong. This show is no laughing matter, unless you always hated anime and wanted to prove that it was a mistake. Conception is so bad that it’s almost like Miyazaki was reincarnated into this world from another world, lewdly held hands with a bad anime, and marketed the product as a television show. Honestly, I don’t even think this one deserves to be called anime but it still needs to be mentioned on this list so you know to avoid it.

3) How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord

Sorry haters, but this is definitely the worst anime of the year. Since Conception is disqualified from being anime, this one takes the cake as some stupid male fantasy garbage isekai show. Disagree with me? Of course not, you don’t want to be proven wrong.
