It’s that time of year folks! The time where the days get shorter and school starts back up for many. Though this time might be disappointing to some, it is also the time for new beginnings. You might be taking a new class, meet new people, or even start a new romance. So while you’re waiting for a nice senpai to notice you, here’s some manga to help tide you over.

Musketeer

One of the best ways to get senpai to notice you is to do something drastic. Though going full Gasai Yuno will definitely get senpai to notice you, it might not be the kind of attention you want from senpai. So the best path to senpai’s good graces would be to become famous. You could be come the ultimate high school oracle, the ultimate high school idol, or you could become a musketeer, one of the king’s guards. Though I doubt you would have much time to pursue senpai if you had responsibilities… I guess going full Gasai Yuno would be the best way to get senpai’s attention.

It always feels great when you find something that makes yousay, “WOW! I need share this with everyone!” To my pleasure, The Musketeer is one of those things. The way that this webtoon conveys the movement of each character is simply a sight to behold. Every swing and every step is drawn in a way that emphasizes the weight and speed of each movement. The art in general is also breath taking. The sheer amount of varying character designs plus the sharp art direction is a pleasure to behold. Although there aren’t many chapters, it feels like the webtoon has a strong grasp of who its world, main characters, and its story. Without out doubt, this is a webtoon to be followed

Tsujiura-San to Chupacabra

Sometimes, no matter what you do, senpai will never notice you. Do not lose hope! For when the local senpais fail you, you can always turn to importing senpais. That’s right! you never know when that dreamboat senpai from Europe will transfer in and sweep you off your feet. Of course your new senpai might turn out to be the manic pixy girl of you nightmare. So, BEWARE!

You know that feeling when you read something and think,“Ha! I could write a better rom com than that!” and the resulting product is worse than what you were mocking? That is the feeling I’m getting from Tsujiuran-San. It feels like everything in this manga was lifted from various other rom-coms across light novels, anime, and manga but with changes for the worse. For example, the main character is basically Hachiman from SNAFU who sacrificed his snarky wit to become an edgy doormat. The rest of the manga fares no better. The comedy often relies on the same visual gag to gets laughs, while the story sticks to conventional rom-com tropes, which makes for a rather dull read. So why would you read Tsujiura-sanover its more polished peers? I would imagine if you couldn’t be bothered to look for any other rom-com novels or you just wanted to have tropes thrown in your face.

Plunderer

There are legendary senpai out in this large world, whose very names shake the world. One of these senpais is Minazuki Suu who is best known for the manga series Heaven’s Lost Property. In his latest series, Suu has created his Night on Bald Mountain. It’s a cacophony of madness and excitement that weaves its audience into a constant state of “I want off of Minazuki Suu’s wild ride.” Those who can resist this sensation just might have a sliver of a chance of becoming Suu’s Kouhai.

If I had to describe Plunderer in one phrase, it would be “I don’t even.” It is completely all over the place with world building, characterization, and tone. At one moment it will have characters duking it out Dragon Ball Z style and then next it will have one of those characters help build a park. Though this manga is a lucid as a fever dream, it’s just so fun. Some of the actions the characters take are completely ridiculous, but they’re presented in such a unique way that you can’t help but grin. I don’t know what may go through Minazuki Suu’s head, but what ever it is, I love it :)

Miracle Hero Nim

Thus the great senpai war of 2015 began. At first it was a simple lunch time discussion between friends about all the senpais at school. One preferred senpais with a bad personality, but a tragic past, while the other loved the sweet and child like senpais. It was all fun and games until one of the friends said a certain phrase about the other’s beloved senpai. They said the one phrase that would change the world. It was the one thing that no true lover of senpais should ever say… and that phrase is “Your senpai is shiiiiiiiiiit!”

Hee hee hee hee hee. Oh man I just can’t describe why this webtoon is amazing. Any description would simply spoil the fun that is this webtoon so I’ll stop here. Though I will say that the webtoon has one central joke and sticks to it and it’s glorious. Just how each of the characters react to the situation this joke has created is pure gold. The timing of each joke is also so solid you could break adamantium with it. I cannot stress enough that you should give this webtoon a shot. It’ll be a fun time and if you don’t like it, don’t worry; it’s only 4 chapters long so far.

Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle

You know what’s cool? Dragons. You know what’s also cool? Gundams. So what would happen if you combined senpais with dragons with Gundams? Probably something like Zane Truesdale from Yu Gi Oh GX. In any case, Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle doesn’t have a Zane expy… much to every Kouhai’s dismay.

Sigh… for the uniformed this… ugh… series is your bog standard fantasy harem. The story follows your bog standard high school age kid who is severely misunderstood and holds great power. He inevitably forms a harem through various actions such as accidental boob grabs and asserting his dominance over others through disco or something. Action happens and it sure is exciting because the art looks like someone who could care less drew it. Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle is the peak of its art by completely ripping off Infinite Stratos and with imaginative things like wielding medieval swords in a high tech society, which doesn’t feel unnatural or anything. And so I declare that Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle will be anime of the year. Buy the Daimakura.

Re:Zero

No matter how hard I try, you alway send up dying. No mater what action I take and how much I learn, you always end up dying. It’s not fair! Why does someone like you have to keep dying?! It’s just not right…

Senpai. No mater how times it will take. I will save you. Even if my bones turn to dust I will keep fighting. So please senpai… stay strong.

~Your cowardly kouhai

If expect Re:Zero to convey some sort of tone similar to the paragraph above, you will be sorely disappointed. For a time looping series, Re:Zero doesn’t have any real hook to engage the audience. Most of this stems from the main character being pretty bland. The main character is rather slow on the up take that he’s in a time loop and he’s not too curious about his situation and so whatever happens to him feels too much like a coincidence. Plus, for a time loop like story, the sequence of events is extremely linear. Effectively, the entire first arc felt like it needed to end as quickly as possible because it ended after introducing the major players in the first time loop. While not bad, I don’t see why this series had to use time looping. At its heart, Re:Zero is ok, but it doesn’t make good use of its main premise due to its linear structure and monotonous lead.
