This year is slowly coming to its end, which means tons of TOP lists, year awards and so on. Despite I won’t be probably doing a year recap myself, I thought that before I’ll bring yet another seasonal roundup, that I’ll share with you the TOP 10 openings of this year.
Before I’ll dump it here, few rules I made for myself - it has to be from the show I have seen (or watching in some cases) and even if there is more than one opening I like for the show, only one per show is allowed. As usual - this is only my personal opinion and if you don’t agree with the list, you have place to share your view in the comment section below, where I hope you’ll respect me so I can respect you as well.
Now without further ado...
10. Seikaisuru Kado
Title: Tabiji | Artist: Saraka Tsukai starring Mao Ichimichi
Adding Seikaisuru Kado opening here is a difficult one. When watching the show, I was so eager to watch, what will happen in the episode, that I’ve always skipped the opening. When doing some digging in openings of shows I’ve seen for this TOP 10 I realized, how amazing the vocals are and that I’ve missed a lot skipping it week after week.
Title: My Hero | Artist: MAN WITH A MISSION
I was born and raised to rock music and during my life I found my way to metal so any opening which meddle with these genres are usually up my alley, but “My Hero” goes one step further. It pumps you for the show you are about to watch. If you’ve seen Inuyashiki then you probably now know, what I’m talking about.
8. Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2
Title: Shinzou wo Sasageyo | Artist: Linked Horizon
Despite I was never huge fan of Shingeki no Kyojin without doubt the two openings of first season were amazing. I was considering not to watch the second season, but hearing that Linked Horizon are back to create the new opening changed my mind. And clearly, I was not disappointed.
Title: gravityWall | Artist: SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Tielle & Gemie
I stated my opinion on Re:Creators in my last season’s roundup (shameless plug) – half way through it I went on watching hiatus and just returned after the show was finished and binged the second half. There were some moments I had to power through. Action and battle theme, which kicked in with it, were probably the only reasons I kept watching this show. Having similar feeling there was no chance I’d skip gravityWall in this list.
6. Ballroom e Youkoso
Title: Invisible Sensation | Artist: UNISON SQUARE GARDEN
It’s a dream of mine to learn how to play guitar. My lack of determination to fully commit to it left me with half-assed skills, where I comfortably can play only a song or two. Nonetheless it’ll always have a special place in my heart and songs like this one will resonate with it – simple guitar, nice vocals, nothing complicated.
5. Youjo Senki
Title: JINGO JUNGLE | Artist: MYTH & ROID
In past I never watched openings as those were just obstacles for me to watch the show itself. When I finally realized, what I’m missing, many of those song found their way to my playlist. The initial enthusiasm slowly fell back as more and more songs became just too similar to what I’ve heard already. Luckily every season there are few songs, that steps out of the line and are just different, such as “JINGO JUNGLE”.
4. Mahoutsukai no Yome
Title: Here | Artist: JUNNA
There is a reason, why so many ballads are played on piano. You can share your feelings through it with such ease. It can be happy, sad or have something dark lurking in the background, which is just a perfect match for Mahoutsukai no Yome.
Title: Red Doors feat. Yoshikazu Mera | Artist: TeddyLoid
Electronic or dance music is not my thing. Usually I avoid these genres and most of the time pretend they don’t exist, but for some reason after hearing “Red Doors” for the first time, it simply clicked. Sometimes there is no explanation, why you like certain song – you simply do.
2. ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka
Title: Shadow and Truth | Artist: ONE III NOTES
It only needed 8 seconds in the beginning of this song to catch me and never let go. As I like rock and metal, I never turn opportunity to listen to some jazz. The usage of saxes, trumpet and trombone in harmony is why this song is so catchy for me. Another point being that every time after I finished an episode of ACCA, I had to return back and listen to the opening again.
Title: Deal with the devil | Artist: Tia
Watching Kakegurui was sometimes like being on a crazy trip to insanity and its opening was able to catch this felling and compress it into one and half minute. The song itself is all over place and paired with somewhat unique art style creates something I can listen to 10 times in a row and then play it again, and again, and again… and don’t get bored of it.
