OP/ED of the Day #6: Gunsmith Cats Theme

Title: Gunsmith Cats Theme | Artist: Peter Erskine | Show: Gunsmith Cats

Hey everyone, Koda here for the latest entry in the OP/ED of the Day series (What's that? Koda's involved in a running segment involving anime OPs and EDs? I'm shocked. SHOCKED I say!) with my first contribution. Everyone else has been doing more recent things, so I decided to turn back the clock a bit, and by a bit, I mean 20 damn years, as the anime this OP is attached to turns 20 in November of this year. Gunsmith Cats is a series about two teenage girls; the 19 year-old Irene "Rally" Vincent and the 17 year-old "Minnie" May Hopkins, as they run the titular gun store and work as bounty hunters on the side in Chicago. Rally has a thing for guns and classic muscle cars, while May prefers things that go "boom".

If you've paid attention to any of my OP lists from last year, it should be no surprise why I like this opening. Great music combined with great visuals will always go a long way with me. In fact, I dare say this is my second favorite overall OP of all time, only behind Cowboy Bebop's OP. Speaking of, both OPs are actually quite similar, combining vividly colored, stylized visuals with amazing saxophone-headlined instrumental music. But focusing specifically on this OP, the whole package makes me think of the buddy cop films and TV shows from the 70's, 80's, and even the early 90's. This OP is actually really nostalgic to me. Not only because it reminds me of a lot of the films and shows I grew up on, but because the anime itself was from my childhood. The Gunsmith Cats anime originally started in 1995 and ended in 1996 in Japan, and was originally released in the United States by ADV from 1996 to 1997, but I personally wouldn't get to see the show until it aired on Encore's Action Channel in 2000. I was eleven at the time. This was actually one of my first exposures to "mature" anime (admittedly it was also one of the first times I saw fanservice in anime as well. >_>). So this series and this OP will always have a special place in my heart.

Oh, and here's the kicker; Gunsmith Cats was only a 3 episode OVA. That's right, that awesome OP was attached to something that only lasted for 3 episodes (it had a staggered release, that's why it ran from '95 to '96 in Japan).

And if you are interested, here's the full version of the show's ED song as a bonus. It's pretty great too.

Koda is a regular contributor to Ani-TAY (perhaps too much of a regular. >_>). He can be found making anime OP lists and writing anime reviews each season. He's a grizzled anime veteran, having been watching since the late 90's. As such, he'll probably be pestering all you newer anime fans when it is his turn to do the OP/ED of the Day with trips down memory lane through OPs and EDs from shows he saw as a child/young teen. Please forgive the old fart.
