OP/ED of the Day #130: Over The Future

Today’s OP is a little different from my previous picks, truthfully I’ve only watched a few episodes of this series, but that is because I discovered the song itself first, before the anime. There is actually a bit of backstory to it, so read on…

Title: Over the Future | Artist: Karen Girls | Anime: Zettai Karen Children

YouTube is a difficult place sometimes, for this particular song I was unable to source the actual OP of the series. The video above contains the correct OP visuals from Zettai Karen Children, but features a version of the song performed by the voice actresses of the titular characters, “The Children”. So the soundtrack of this video was not actually the same as the broadcast OP (it is pretty close though). The actual OP song was performed by a group called the “Karen Girls” who were a group of child performers assembled specifically for this anime. The PV (Promotional Video) of the Karen Girls version of “Over the Future” is below.

Aren’t they effing adorable? Ahem, well anyway, this is the actual sound track that was used in the anime series’ OP, so imagine the first video’s visuals with this last video’s song and you’ve got the broadcast OP. Some of you may have already noticed that one of the “Karen Girls” is actually Suzuka Nakamoto or Su-Metal of Babymetal fame. Karen Girls was in the first group that Suzuka was a member of (she was 10 at the time), preceding her membership in the idol group Sakura Gakuin and then later Babymetal. If you haven’t heard of those groups I would encourage you to check them out, I find them immensely enjoyable.

This last video was actually how I discovered the song and ultimately the OP and anime, it is Babymetal covering the Karen Girls, or basically lead singer Su-metal covering herself. Babymetal is actually performing in Chicago (my home sweet home) next week, so that gave me inspiration to try to work them into one of these OP/ED articles.

If you liked today’s OP/ED, check out my previous entry, the eminently danceable, Motteke! Sailor Fuku! from Lucky Star.

Jonuiuc is an occasional contributor of writing and convention photography on TAY and AniTAY. You will most likely see him in the comment sections of other author’s articles, contributing to collaborations, or doing short posts (like this one) that are light on graphics and even lighter on editing. Jon loves catchy pop just as much as he loves the heavy rock, he is not ashamed. He doesn’t like everything though, he just likes what he likes.

The bonus non-anime related song for today is even more J-pop idol music from Sakura Gakuin, which is a school themed idol group which the members must “graduate” from when they reach real-life middle school graduation age (15 or so). Babymetal was originally a sub-unit of this group that became monstrously successful. For this particular track Suzuka had already graduated, but Babymetal members Moa and Yui are featured; Heart no Hoshi
