Nope its not Coldplay, this song is actually the OP from Ergo Proxy, performed by Japanese alt-rock band Monoral. Yes it is in English and it’s actually well enunciated. It’s a perfect fit for the mood and aesthetics of Ergo Proxy, a series that is still gorgeous and unique by today’s standards.
I remember first reading about this anime when it was featured in the short lived Newtype USA magazine, along with a DVD sample of the 1st episode. While the storyline was a bit oblique, Ergo Proxy looked great and was one of the first “HD” animes that I remember watching (for those of us that had 480i progressive scan DVD players and TV’s that could support that resolution). The art design was striking and moody, with a very filmic look and realistic proportions to art designs and textures. Protagonist Re-L Mayer’s eye shadow/liner may be the best makeup ever executed on an anime character. While the story is a bit of a slow burn, I’d still recommend seeking the series out if you haven’t seen it yet.
If you want to listen to an op/ed from another great anime from the mid-2000 (which may be a golden era in anime music), also check out my last OP of the Day:
Jonuiuc is an occasional contributor of writing and photography on TAY and AniTAY. You will most likely see him in the comment sections of other articles, contributing to collaborations, or doing short posts (like this one) that are light on graphics and even lighter on editing. Jon doesn’t like all goth/emo aesthetics, he just likes what he likes.
