OP/ED A Day #46 : Nippon Egao Hyakkei

Man being given the day after Valentines, it's a tough one and I wasn't really sure how to go about this. We have people who might be hung over from Valentine (both emotionally and physically) and those who are still have a beaming smile on their face due to a wonderful Valentines.

So I ask myself one question, what do people want to do no matter the situation, and is also a great "get out of jail free card"? Laughter! Laughter is always the answer. So I present you with…

Song: Nippon Egao Hyakkei | Artist : Momoiro Clover Z & Yoshida Brothers | Series : Joshiraku

That was fun wasn't it?

So what makes a great OP/ED for me? Well there are a couple of things I look for, especially for a "baka gaijin" like myself. For starters, I love me some piano, if it's got some then I'm probably all in. Sometimes if someone's voice is like honey in my ears (Minori Chihara for example) then I'm all down to listening to some powerful or strong vocals from certain artists. Accessibility is a major factor as well, by that; I mean how easy it is for me to reproduce the music and sounds. Oh, and the level of "Engrish" in a song can sometimes be what pushes an OP/ED from okay, to freaking great, but that's always going to be subjective from one person to another. Songs sung by character/s (or more accurately the voice actor singing as their character in the song) from the show are enticing as well, especially if you like the character. Oh and how catchy the song is (probably the same as accessibility), you can't go wrong if it's cute and poppy or if it's just got a killer chorus you can't shake off.

I think we should all accept this way of life. Laugh, laugh till our sides ache! The moment we cry we lose. I love it. We need to be able to laugh at ourselves, laugh in the face of the dark despair ahead of us, because if not, then you're just a sour grape. The lyrics contain great suggestions in how to go about your daily life. Laughter is a cure all, to a certain degree, and it works pretty well if you ask me.

Secondly, it's got such an insanely catchy beat! The slightly auto tuned voice is somewhat amazing. Oh how they sing, a 3 second solo transitioned into a group chorus, with rapid lyric spitting. These singers do everything for you! They even manage to keep in character!! The way the song tricks you thinking it was one of those Ye Olde songs, and breaks into that modern, fast paced, beat. They even carry on using those instruments and Ye Olde song style notes and blend it together with this modern track. The sound effects incorporated into the song don't even make sense I feel, yet it increases the level of fun.

Oh and let's not forget the visuals. Granted not the most involving, but when you've got dem chibis, everyone is a winner really. All of the little chibis are synced up nicely with the song and the visuals match that vigorous beat. It's a joy to watch all together.

What we really have is a marriage of great sound, poetic lyrics and adorable visuals. Can't go wrong!
