Title: Mayonaka no Taiyou (Midnight Sun) | Artist: Kayoko Kurota | Show: Tenchi Muyo GXP
Description: Tenchi Muyo GXP is the first of two really fun spinoff series from Tenchi Muyo. This one picks up shortly after the original Tenchi Muyo series leaves off, with that stupid pink-haired fop from the second-to-last episode becoming a recurring villain in this series. (This matters, because TM, Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo are all completely separate universes.) Our hero this time is not really related to Tenchi in any way, but is an old friend of some sort; he knows everyone on the property, at any rate. Someone from the Galaxy Police Force, of which Mihoshi is a member, believes him to be Tenchi’s student and recruits him on the spot by force while he is making a delivery to the house. Turns out, this kid is a singularity of bad luck, and much of the anime is spent trying to either uncurse him or harness his misfortune for good purposes. In the end, they partially succeed at both through the magic of a 9-member (including him) harem ending. No, I am not kidding.
Why You Picked It: The song itself is kinda sexy, with smoky vocal tones and a sultry backbeat, alongside a graphical focus on this poor schlub and a shitload of hot women that are after him for whatever reasons. It feels like a more upbeat / high-tech version of Himegoto, the ending theme from Vandread.
As is the case with many Toonami offerings, they made a dub version (which is, as usual, inferior in my completely unhumble opinion). They managed to get most of the meaning across but the voice on the singer just doesn’t give any of the same effect:
