This originally ran on 12/28/2015. But giving the confusing timeline of Concrete Revolutio, and the upcoming second cour on April 3rd (Or April 10th? I don’t know), I’m bumping this to give all potential viewers a reminder of where we left off, and where we may be heading.
We come to the final act of our confrontation between Claude & Jiro, the students & the government. The Strange Power Risk Management Office, or the Sciencers from 2 weeks ago (repairing the Robot Detective, episode 11) and from episode 7 (Earth-chan and the cafe scene) are finally revealing to the press the horrors occurring on Ogasawara island. The over a hundred kids there were experimented on to artificially create a power like Jiro, and the Bureau is taking the fall in the press for it. There is some push back here between the government wanting to keep their state secrets locked up, and the role of media in presenting the facts, regardless of the desires of the government. In response, students across the world rise up in protest, with those in Japan being led by the mastermind behind the reveal, Claude. In order to bring Kikko back to her senses, Emi forces Jiro to promise her not to see her ever again. This should be the straw that led Jiro to leave the Bureau, while he was still not totally antagonistic towards them. However, it’s yet to be seen what brings out Scarf Jiro in full blown war against the Bureau in the 46th year (Episode 1). What’s also curious is that a full year later during the Immortal Family incident (Episode 9), Emi recants and asks Jiro to return to the Bureau, which he stubbornly refuses.
I’m still a little unclear on what the goal of the Teito Media Inc. Boss is in all of this. It’s stated by a government official (the former Minister of Defense from Episode 11) that they’re only “out to make a quick buck selling superhuman stars” but if so, I doubt this is the way they would go about doing this. I can see his role taking a much larger position of influence in the second cour, and their true goals to be revealed later. He may very well be a superhero himself.
I hope you all enjoyed that V for Vendetta reference. Too bad the battle between the students and government was in October and not November to bring the reference completely around. Meanwhile, all of our superhero friends from past episodes watch the battle until eventually joining in. Some join the student/Claude side to protect the rights of superhumans, others join the government side to stop the violent nature of these protests and bring peace once more. Even the Bureau is split between those on either side, with Furuuota and Kikko (albeit under hypnosis/drugged) helping Claude and Jiro, Hyoma (Tiger/Time dude) and Emi on the government side.
Finally, we come to the battle between Jiro and Claude. If you didn’t pick up how closely Concrete is following a Japanese-style Watchmen before, “Then who protects the Superheroes” should have done it. Claude believes he has to fight to protect the freedoms of superheroes and allow for true justice to protect superheroes from the tragedies that happened on Ogasawara island. Jiro doesn’t believe that violence is the right way of going about this, that Superhumans shouldn’t fight humans, but protect them. Ironically, Jiro is forced to unleash his true power to defeat Claude, while also losing control of himself, forcing Judas to bring all of our superhero friends to help save Jiro from himself. He is also helping Scarf Jiro in the 47th year in the future (Earth-chan, episode 7), but isn’t around for several of the other future events, which will be presumably explained more in the second cour.
I have to admit, the scene with everyone singing was seriously CHEESY but oh well. Emi is forced to close the locks for Jiro for the second time, and yet in the future Scarf Jiro has much better control of his powers, without Emi’s help. Earth-chan is mysteriously destroyed in the aftermath, probably leading to the events with Scarf Jiro and Judas, but by whom is still unclear.
In the aftermath, Jiro leaves the Bureau to avoid Kikko and keep his promise, to the dismay of Emi who wanted Kikko to be the one to leave. Finally, the crashed plane in the end, the “Enola Gay” was the real-life plane to drop the bombs on Japan during World War 2, only in Concrete Revolutio, the bomb that was dropped is seemingly Jiro. This suggests his immense powers and why Master Ultima is so obsessed with obtaining those powers.
I assume I will be the one reviewing Concrete Revolutio as a whole for AniTAY so you will be hearing my full thoughts later (edit: Morie and I reviewed it together! You can find it here). In short, I really enjoyed the show and am eagerly awaiting the second cour, but the time skipping could be a major, understandable deterrent for potential viewers. I’ve seen complaints from several people that the “disorganized” writing didn’t help the show and I can’t entirely disagree. Not the best show of the season, but easily the most underrated and underwatched. Enjoy the images, I’ll see you in April!
