What an episode! And we’ve finally got confirmation on that second season! It’s been a really good week for Kikko and Gugsy. Timelines! Spoilers! Meteorterre!

After everything I complained last week about how Concrete Revolutio isn’t pushing its story fast enough, today’s episode gave us all that and more! We begin with an appearance from this week’s superhero, later revealed to be Mysterious Knife Claude (With help from more than a few references to Code Geass’s Lelouch Lamperouge), who confronts the American Superhuman Submarine, USS Antares. Meanwhile, the Angel Stars (Episode 6) return to give a superhuman concert to the sailors, while Kikko oversees amidst the sea of student protestors we’ve come to be familiar with. We learn from the Doctor that Emi helped found the study of superhuman folklore, most likely due to her command and control of monsters. But it’s the quote from the maid that is key, “Maybe Jiro can’t say no to her”. If we remember the Immortal Family (Episode 9), Emi repeatedly tries to get Jiro to return to the Bureau yet he ultimately refuses, suggesting that something major we haven’t seen yet will have to happen to split these two apart.

Moving along, the Teito Advertisement Inc. that has sparked the MegaGon (Episodes 4&5) and the Anti-Superhuman Drug (Episode 6) incidents are still antagonistic to the Bureau. They consider Superhumans to be evolved versions of humans, but don’t consider monsters like Emi or witches like Kikko to be ones. Here, their only goal was to distract the Bureau enough for Claude to destroy the Antares. Meanwhile, the Robot Detective has returned to argue about the Defense Federation of Earth plan (Episodes 7&8) with the student protestors and eventually Claude. This is where Concrete Revolutio really shines in its complicated take on justice, and who really is in the right between those who fight for Justice, for Freedom or for Peace. Claude recognizes Kikko instantly, while Kikko takes a little longer to realize who Claude is. She does though recognize the similarities in the “Fire-Explosion” Powers that Claude and Jiro both have. When she comes to, we get another adorable instance of Kikko in love with Jiro, yet her senpai not noticing.

In the immediate aftermath, it’s clear the toll that dealing with the Teito Inc. has had on Jiro, as he immediately considers the worst and fears Claude as an enemy, driving Kikko away from him in the process. If you didn’t recognize the Sciencers who were helping repair the Robot Detective, they were in the cafe in Earth-chan’s episode when she confronted Judas (Episode 7). Kikko follows a lead to find Claude covered in blood and surrounded by dead bodies, which forces Kikko to lose it for the first time and fully unleash her Queen of the Demon World transformation. (Accompanied by an alternative version of the OP in the background). It isn’t until Claude reveals his identity to Kikko that she reverts back to normal.

This episode perfectly encapsulates why I hated last week’s episode, beyond the time travel stuff. Here, we have another episodic hero story, yet has a lot of different connections to other episodes to help drive the larger plot forward. Last week really has no connection to anything that happened before, or to this week and instead introduced a plot element that can make everything going forward messy and less coherent. Notice how in the preceding three paragraphs, I’ve mentioned plot points from all of the last seven episodes EXCEPT 10. Now that time travel is involved, Claude could literally be anyone, but it’s hinted very strongly at being the boy in the photo, who I will guess is Jiro’s brother without further clues.

Let’s get to predictions! The preview of the next episode promises a new superhero to follow, but also gives us glimpses of the Doctor meeting with the Teito Inc. Head Guy, and the return of Claude. We’ve got two more episodes before the season ends so I’ll say that it’s Claude and this struggle between Justice, Freedom and Peace that drives Jiro into conflict with Kikko, Emi and the Bureau. And while the Bureau remains intact in the immediate aftermath of Jiro’s split, I’ll guess that future conflict over the Defense Federation of Earth agreements causes Chief Akita to be removed in the 43-44th years. Going further, the Bureau is ultimately removed and superhumans are forced to go into hiding sometime in the 46-47th years.

Thank the anime gods, this is getting a second season. I was worried this would end messily, but more time is everything Concrete needs, and could be a sleeper hit in the new year.
