Chapter 24: Dororo & Hyakkimaru
The fight between Hyakkimaru and Dororo continues while the castle burn in flames. At the same time, Lady Ainu, the mother of the siblings, is accompanied by the blind monk in order to reach the place of the fight, while at the same time Dororo tries to enter the castle and Jukai tries the same on his side!
Back on the fight, Tahomaru starts talking while fighting, the memories he had about this place, about his time with both Mutsu and Hyogo, the room he had, the times he played, studied and trained, and… the love of his Mother…Hyakkimaru has took everything! Something that its not his! The ronin, after saying that this place belongs to him, responds by saying that Tahomaru is just like him! He has everything…But still, he is missing something! Tahomaru can´t understand what he is saying and the battle continues!
Meanwhile at the outskirts of the castle, Dororo is able to find Ainu and the monk, the wife of the Daimyo is going through a secret passage, she is going to try and save her children. She asks Dororo to wait for them, because she is the one who will always be at the side of Hyakkimaru.
The fight continues, but the result of the match is done. Hyakkimaru is superior to Tahomaru, still, he does not kill his brother. Tahomaru ask why, and Hyakkimaru answers by saying that he doesn´t know, but… Yeah, he didn´t wanted to kill him. Tahomaru has recognized his defeat and recognizes Hyakkimaru as his brother… Suddenly the demon starts moving, it wants to use Tahomaru´s body as a vessel! Knowing that Tahomaru decides to stop such plan and to give to his brother what is his!
Tahomaru strips his eyes off! The ground opens and the real form of the demon appears. Hyakkimaru quickly kills him! Still it seems he is done for since the ceiling will fall above him, Tahomaru is too weak to do something to save him.
Luckily, Jukai and Ainu has come. She embraces her child and tells him how much she loves him; she should have never let him go. Tahomaru fells unconscious. Hyakkimaru´s real eyes start coming. He is able to see both of his “mothers” and hearing Dororo´s voice, who decided to go and help, Jukai orders him to go with her, but before that Jukai gives him a new statue of a goddess, the goddess of mercy.
The mother of the brothers goes with Tahomaru and embraces him, she apologizes for always leaving him alone and never be with him, but she promises to never leave him again, she will always be by his side… The fire spreads and consumes the three of them.
At the same time, Dororo is helping Hyakkimaru to get out and with the help of the Monk both are able to run free of the castle. While they escape, Hyakkimaru said that the sky was pretty and that Dororo is pretty too!
Meanwhile, Daigo has gone to war, he receives the message of what happened and says that he will do justice. The result of the battle was atrocious, countless lives where wasted protecting this land, either Daigo loose or the victory had a great cost.
Some days have passed and the things have settled down. Dororo has a plan for this land, they might not be warriors, but she has da money! So she will spend it on this land! They will make a new land with the money she has!
After that she goes with the monk who congratulates her, plus he says that what he originally said about that wasn´t very deep in the end, but she has outdone herself! Still they talk about Hyakkimaru, it seems he is a little down, plus it seems he went on his journey…Since he has lost a lot too… His Mother and Brother are dead now, so he must be feeling very sad about it.
Hyakkimaru went to the hall of hell, dead bodies were scattered.
Inside the hall, Daigo was awaiting for him, he ask Hyakkimaru if the land he see is pretty? Hyakkimaru says that it isn´t. Daigo then says that everything its his fault, the land is dead thanks to him. Hyakkimaru ask him if he would do another pact with the demons? Daigo says that he will do! In order to attain his ambition, he will keep doing as many pacts as needed! Hyakkimaru then grabs a sword. Daigo, expecting to be killed by his own son, says that he can do whatever he wants, he just will be a demon protecting this land alongside Tahomaru!
Back with Dororo, The monk keeps explaining, that Hyakkimaru, for the first time, is alive, so he is experimenting a lot of stuff now. Still he must feel he has to attain redemption. Dororo fears that Hyakkimaru might leave her forever, but still she trust that they will meet again.
Back with Hyakkimaru, he just graved the sword in the helmet, he says that he is a human, he won’t do anything to him, Daigo will not become a demon, he will, as a human, have to keep on living and attain a new path of redemption, just like him. Before leaving, he leaves the statue of the goddess of mercy. Daigo, seeing the strength of his son, how his resolution might be the real answer to save this land instead of the demons, start crying, he has lost everything and now…He has to keep on living on a new path after seeing how much damage he did.
Both Dororo and Hyakkimaru have started their different journeys now, as story tells, the Sengoku period is about to begin…Still, the blind monk believes that sadness and despair will not be the only thing these two souls will get, they will get a lot pf positive things too. One day, with Dororo as a teenager, she sees again her partner, Hyakkimaru.
End of the Chapter
We have come to an end, as I suspected it was an ending with a bitter sweet tone since so much sacrifices were made, although in the end, Hyakkimaru didn´t became a demon, he is a human and will always be one, and he follows the path of mercy. At the same time, Dororo will help the land now that its ruined and Daigo can´t do much really.
One of the parts that made me teary was when Tahomaru´s mom went to him and apologized for not putting much attention to him, to even if unintentional, always putting him on the back burner; still she promised that in the next life she will not leave his side. At the same time, Tahomaru was a little bit all over the place, but he was able to reach the truth and as an honorable warrior admit his defeat and tried to help his brother, even with the pain that his friends are dead now. So yeah…Seeing both of them gone, was sad, plus Jukai too.
On the side of Daigo, I actually loved that he wasn´t killed, Hyakkimaru gave him something tougher, he has to continue living and amend his mistakes, keep fighting in order to make his land a better place. Hearing that and the resolution of his first born child, that maybe, if he had not done such pact, that strength would have been the one that saved this land… Was a reality hard to digest for him, still what’s done is done, and now he has no power other than his resolution and desire to live and redeem.
Now in general terms, this was an amazing journey. From the first chapter I knew this anime was one that one had to look up, not only for the production values, which very rarely went down, but for the whole story and how it was told. Really, a good remake for one of the classic stories of Osamu Tezuka, and one that I know it will stay on my memory for a lot of time.
Finally, I don´t know what series I will cover… Or if I do that this summer season, but we’ll see what happens and I hope to, again, be accompanied by you!
Anyway my two cents. See ya Next time!
