Chapter 20: The story of Enu
The chapter starts with Tahomaru and his retainers, they are in an area inside their domain, sickness and famine abounds now, a lot of village has been victims of several disasters. The future Daimyo is trying to do what he can, but still it is not much. One of his retainers wonders if it’s the work of a demon, for that they decide to go to the hall of hell.
In the domains of the Maimyo, he has been informed about such events on his land; the words of his wife resonate inside his mind, about how the deal with the demons has been broken off, but also, that it seems that an statue in the hall of hell is… palpitating, faint, but an statue its having light pulses.
Meanwhile Dororo and Hyakkimaru keeps going forward, the little one is amazed by the fall colors and all of the read of the leaves, she wonders why she hasn´t noticed it, she has traveled on mountains in the fall before… Maybe she was too busy trying to survive, but now with Hyakkimaru, she can feel at peace.
The Ronin notices that she is hungry, so he gives her some fruit for her to eat. Dororo keeps explaining more things to him, and he listened.
While traveling, the duo was searching for a demon, soon enough a strange man who looked like a Ronin tells them he has been searching for the demon too, so he will join them. This man reveals that the demon ate his mom and made him that huge scar on his chest, and he, like Hyakkimaru feels there is something missing with him.
The man takes them to where the demon is and such being appears. Hyakkimaru is about to fight him until he gets betrayed by the man who brought him here! Such man reveals that the hole that exist in him after his mother got killed gets filled each time he brings a new victim to the demon! The battle continues until both Dororo and Hyakkimaru fell of a cliff.
Dororo woke up, he and Hyakkimaru are fine, but the little has been trapped by the arm. Still, she says that it will get out eventually, so there should not be much problem! Bad news for them it was that the place was getting filled with water, so Hyakkimaru was doing everything he could to get her out, to the point where he broke his prosthetic arm and damaged his forehead. The water was coming and in desperation the Ronin started smashing his head towards the stone.
It is not thanks to the blind monk who just was passing along that he was able to save little Dororo. Hyakkimaru felt powerless, since there are limit to the prosthesis he has. They aren´t real bones or real flesh, they will get broken eventually… He is decided to get his body back! The monk ask him why he wants his body back? Which the Ronin answers by saying…”because its mine”.
With that though, Hyakkimaru went off to face the demon. The samurai who lure them to it starts remembering, how one day, walking on the mountains, he was carrying his mom in order to get her to the doctor, he tells his Mom about his dream of becoming a samurai and use his sword in order to provide and give a good life to his Mom, she was proud of him and supported him…
That is until the demon appeared, the Chimera-like creature attacks them and an arm went flying.
Back in the present, Hyakkimaru has reached the place and the fight against the demon begun. The man tried to stop him, but our Hero broke off his sword! The battle continued and he was able to gravely injure the demon!
The memories of the man start coming again, he remembers when he came back to the town, his Mother´s arm was grabbing him, in the face of danger, he forgot about everything and just focused on survive, even if it meant leaving someone he loved behind. He entered in depression until other villagers invited him to go with them and hunt the beast, they will avenge her!
In the end…It was the same, people begging for their lives, just caring about themselves. By looking at that, he felt that the emptiness on his heart got filled.
In the present, Hyakkimaru is about to kill the demon! The man just feels jealous about him, because he does not beg, does not run! He is not afraid! He should be him! The creature takes its opportunity and ate the man, taking a new form with wings. The final stage of this battle has begun!
A little later, Dororo has finally reached Hyakkimaru, the scene is a blood bath. The little one follows the blood path and finds Hyakkimaru killing the demon, the part of man told him that he was just like him… A monster.
The demon has been killed, but no human part has come back. He is still hurting the body, but nothing comes! Dororo stops him and Hyakkimaru then starts walking, he says that he is going where Daigo Kagemitsu is… He has all his body parts! The blind monk watches them and wonders if this is their fate…Such a tragic one.
In the hall of hell, Tahomaru and his retainers see a mysterious statue that has grabbed two different parts, while it pulsates itself.
End of the Chapter
An excellent chapter! Mas was I hooked the whole time of the chapter! The whole story of that wannabe samurai and how the whole…hole stuff, was because he found justification to his guilt, that everyone is a coward and will act in a selfish way in order to save themselves, just like he did with his mother to whom he let her die. He wanted to be brave like Hyakkimaru, but failed and now tried to excuse himself for his cowardice.
At the same time, while we see how much Hyakkimaru cares for Dororo, there are a lot of darkness inside him and that he hasn´t come to any other resolution to want his body back other than, “because its mine”. Which…Yeah, its his body, he does not need any reason, but maybe it might be that his state of mind could have something to do on why when he kills a demon he doesn´t get anything back…Or maybe those demons didn´t ate him!
In another point. Daigo´s land is falling a part, and maybe that does not have anything to do with Hyakkimaru, as his Mom said, the pact with the demons has been broken, so regardless of his existence or the demon killing, the land of Daimyo is destined to go back as how it was.
Finally, Hyakkimaru has put his sights on Daigo, on getting his body back, one of the reasons is to be a complete human and experience everything that Dororo has been telling him, and to be more help for his companion, since as we saw, the prosthesis have a limit in functionality, so there is no other way for him, he wants his body and he wants it now!
Anyway my two cents. See ya Next time!
