Chapter 13: The Story of the Blank-faced Budha
The chapter starts with Dororo and Hyakkimaru, the Ronin has not been eating well nor getting enough sleep, he is on a crusade against the demons, with the decision of getting his whole body back. Dororo knows that in truth he is suffering, he is not getting enough rest, and she is concerned for her big bro.
They have left the Daigo´s land, but the journey continues. The little one ask someone about a hot springs, one close by, she tells Hyakkimaru about it, but he won´t listen, for that Dororo says a little lie… That in such place there is a monster. Hearing that and without any doubt, the duo goes to that place.
In another part, one man is being dragged by a woman, the man yells that this woman is not his wife! The mysterious woman puts him under the sword of Fuma, a budhist violent deity, the sword fell and cuts the face, such face went to the demonic statue, it rejected it. She needs to continue in search for another one.
Meanwhile, in the domains of the Daimyo, the rain has come, it seems that whatever sacrifice was made, it was a success, in the distance, the wife of the Daimyo is resting. Meanwhile, Tahomaru is suffering the loss of his eye…The pact with the demons still stands.
Back with our heroes, Dororo and Hyakkimaru have reached an empty house near a waterfall, Dororo orders Hyakkimaru to get some sleep, while she goes and search for something to eat and some wood for the fire. While searching for it, she finds the waterfall and the huge statue of Fudo. Near it, a woman has found her, that woman has the same face as her now deceased mom, her name is Okaka. She is the owner of the house where Hyakkimaru is sleeping. Still, Dororo decides to bring her to Hyakkimaru.
There, the little one ask the Ronin if she is a ghoul? Hyakkimaru says that she isn´t but he is not sure she is human. In any case, she is in the clear. Okaka starts cooking and starts telling the tale of the statue in the waterfall.
Once upon a time there was a famous sculpture of Budha, this person was more known from the hability to make such a gentle face of the Budha, sadly, this violent times has made that the people start seeing a more imposing figure in the form of Fudo, the budhist violent deity. Fearing to fall into anonymity, the sculpture came here and started doing a Fudo statue, sadly the face was not his forte, a face filled with wrath and violence, since only could do faces of people this artist has seen.
While talking, both Hyakkimaru and Dororo starts falling sleep, the drug has worked, she doesn´t need the face of a child, but someone like Hyakkimaru is perfect. For that she starts dragging the Ronin towards the Fudo statue, because she is that sculpture, she is the one who is destined to search for the perfect face of such demonic being.
Dororo, sleepy and all, goes and search for Okaka (to which the little one started calling Mama), she is able to find them and is able to rescue Hyakkimaru, who gets up and see the statue, that being is a demonic being!
Hyakkimaru ignores Okaka and goes towards the statue, he is not able to make a dent and even worse he is thrown towards the waterfall, where the dead bodies of its victims are trapped. Meanwhile Okaka explains to Dororo that she has the hability to change her face and voice in order to convince the man and come to her!
Hyakkimaru is able to get out and tries to attack the statue, then he hears a familiar voice, one that resembled of his Mother, still the face didn´t changed since Hyakkimaru doesn´t even know how she is. Quickly, Hyakkimaru goes towards the face and destroys the malevolent being! The sword falls and hurts Okaka, who dies at the hands of Dororo, she asks if Dororo can smile for her, which she does, that smile was like Budha… After that, she dies.
After that, Hyakkimaru and Dororo are again on the road, Dororo tries to tell her big bro that all about the monster on the hot spring was a lie, but Hyakkimaru understands and tells her that he is ok now, and they can go to the hot springs and have a good and relaxing time bathing.
When they get in, they ended up meeting the blind monk, alongside a bunch of kids and other people who goes to bath there. Some familiar happiness was due for our duo.
End of the Chapter
A very good return for the series! For obvious reasons, hopin that this chapter would have the same kind of intensity as the past one was foolish, but nevertheless, it’s a good return to form for this second half.
One thing that one can see is how Hyakkimaru starts talking more and more, specially with Dororo, while he might still not talk much, he is opening to Dororo and making changes, at the same time, he now knows that Dororo cares for him and wants him to be fine, especially after what happened on the last chapter and his sudden obsession with getting his whole body back.
On another point, the people on Daigo´s land are having a good time, but we all now that this thing is temporary, and while I´m glad the Mom is alive, we can see that this isn´t over nor for Daigo, nor for Tahomaru.
Anyway my two cents. See ya Next time!
