Listen. Even before this all kicked off, I always thought Vic Mignogna came off as a total jerk.
Look at that face. That’s the face of the dude who speaks as loud as possible into his speakerphone everywhere he goes and blares his horn at you the millisecond the traffic light turns green. He is a former high school teacher...that guy was the one who had a scowl on his face the whole time and would make gross comments to the girls in his history class (you know the kind of high school teacher, you had one). No, I’m not making light of a situation, I’m just starting this off by saying how much this guy came off the wrong way to me right from the jump.
I have been livid thinking about this situation since Vic sued Funimation, Jamie Marchi, Monica Rial, and Ronald Toye a few weeks ago. If you haven’t been following the situation, I don’t blame you for trying to stay away from the bad vibes...however I just have to get this off of my chest. I know dubs are something plenty of people like, and we have lots of new writers here who like them, but I’ve been sick to my flippin’ stomach trying to write about dubs the last few weeks knowing this is happening.
For years through streams, rumblings on Tumblr pages and Twitter horror stories there has been a well documented trail showing misconduct by this dude, and the fact that people want to still defend this piece of trash irks me to no end. The “Me Too” has been something I think has been revolutionary for a multitude of career fields, and it is about time that people get the courage to speak up in the voice acting industry as well. This angle people are attacking this news, saying that they are sick of “social justice” and that they don’t want politics in their anime needs to stop. If you hear it out and about? You need to speak out to these fools.
This isn’t a “dubs suck” deal, or a “leave the real world out of my anime” situation either. This is about humanity, and people need to wake up. No one should have to feel like they have to do their work with the threat of being harassed over anything- I don’t care what it is about, no one should have to be harassed by a co-worker. This narrative that we need to wait for the details to come out? Ridiculous. You know who sues for defamation that quickly? A punk. A punk without gull. No one says “I have now very reluctantly retained a law firm as my last and only recourse to attempt to salvage my reputation and my 20-year career in this industry.” unless they’re guilty. Look at that crap. Look at it. Seriously. You don’t need a team of the most highly trained investigators to see the track record this guy has had coupled with his own half-assed apologies to realize he is guilty. Ask the plethora of fans who were uncomfortable about his actions at a convention. It isn’t hard to realize what is happening here.
Voice acting is a tough business, and there are only so many roles to go around. So much talent is out there, and the public doesn’t always get to see some amazing actors shine. I am sickened to my core that talent would have to be distracted by this sort of thing and, furthermore, quality roles that could put a lesser known name out there more are hogged by fiends like Mignogna.
This news sucks further because it puts a frustrating stain on so many quality dubs. I can’t watch Full Metal Panic without thinking about the fact this bum is in it. Think about that character he plays in the show for a second. Yeah, that’s right: it is downright disturbing to hear him sexually harass characters now. Go back and do a revisionist history and I am willing to bet my bottom dollar he took another role like that one. A lot of people who have been let down by this news has cited how tough it is to look at the dub of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood because of Mignogna voicing the main character in it. I’m saddened by this. An incredible dub is now forever stained by this scum. I was writing an extensive Dubs w/ Dil about that dub right before this news came out, and I was even writing a bit about how I was not a fan of Mignogna because of those rumblings we had all long heard. Also, One of my favorite Persona characters because of their character development has always been Junpei...guess who voiced him? YEP.
Anyways, I decided to vent about this because I couldn’t go on much longer without voicing my disappointment in this situation. Now that we’re cutting the grass to show the snakes, I want to see the full scale of it pan out so we know which actors to avoid casting. This isn’t about being “woke” or any of the buzzwords people hate. Support dub acting (and professionalism in general) of those who are hard working and respectful of others, and do right.
