Well this is something I never thought I’d do, write about a Kickstarter. However continuing the trend of using the platform to gauge fan support for a product (See Sony re: Shenmue) , Funimation which recently licensed saved The Vision of Escaflowne in North America from Bandai has started a kickstarter to create a new dub for the iconic anime.
According to Funimation a new dub is required as the HD Materials they have received from Japan does not match with the currently existing dub produced by Bandai. This is because the HD Edition is a directors cut with various changes making this arguably the definitive version of the series. Plus a new dub will change some of the localization decisions that still exist even in the uncut Bandai DVD’s.
After only a day open the Kickstarter has raised well over $100,000.00 of its $150,000.00 goal. If this was designed to gauge fan support for the property I think it’s been a resounding success. I wont encourage ANYONE EVER to support a kickstarter but this is one of the most tempting I’ve ever seen.
