Every Season of Anime in the Past Decade (2010-2019), By the Numbers

There have been a lot of seasonal anime that have come and gone through the past decade. Some will never be forgotten by some, others may wish to forget about the...less savory ones (or, if you’re part of a special group of writers here, you relish in those less savory ones!). However one might remember a given season of anime, it begs the question “Which season was the best?” or “What was the best year in anime this past decade?”

I have spent the last few drives home from the gym pondering about this myself, and decided it would be fun to try to gather some statistics to gain some insight. Using MyAnimeList (MAL), I have gathered seasonal anime statistics, starting with Winter 2010. I thought it would be fun to do this too since I do not know a ton about anime before a certain year, so seeing titles and their ratings/popularity would be very informative. It is my hope that, while individuals do not care for MAL ratings much, this guide may of use for discussions among anime fans and/or individuals attempting to write up about different years of anime this decade as well as serve as a great tool in discussions!

Here are ground rules before we dive into the statistics:

  • There will be an “Quality Anime Rating” (QAR) awarding shows falling into the score of 7.0-7.99 with 1 point, 8.0-8.99 will be awarded 2 points, and 9.0+ will get 3 points. I chose QAR because I believe that a season should have “good, great, amazing” accounted for rather than just “good and great” shows. Also, if I were to go off of average scores for a season with the same point range, there runs the risk of having skewed scores (perhaps one season has 2 “7.0-7.99" shows and the same amount of “8.0-8.9" as another season that might have had significantly more “7.0-7.99" scores...an average score would not display that the season had more quality shows than the competition)
  • Statistics will be provided for each season and year’s total number of shows in each category (ex: “Winter 2010 has x shows that were 8.0-8.99, the most of 2010!” or “2010 had a whopping x amount of shows with a score of 8.0-8.99, the most of the decade!). This is to cover up some holes that a system like QAR might miss. Additionally, this will allow for some entertaining statistics at the very end!
  • While this is a gathering of scores provided by fan votes, the scores themselves will not be given any preferential treatment. Even if a show lands on 7.98, it will not be rounded up to 8.0. Similarly, just because I may personally not like an anime on the list, I will not voice this opinion. This is a by the numbers listing. I will leave it to the commentators to discuss where they agree/disagree with statistics.
  • Anime from 8.0-8.99 and 9.0+ will be listed in that given season’s findings. Those landing in 7.00-7.99 will not be listed one by one. There are far more in the latter’s category than the the former.
  • For the sake of having the information available, I will list the five most popular anime for each season along with their respective “member count” according to MAL’s presented statistics. Each year will be given the top five, and these “member counts” will be compared across years.
  • OVA/ONA/Movie/Specials will only be counted if they are both LEGALLY available for streaming AND of 12-13 episode length. This is my lengthiest rule, but with the landscape of how anime accessibility is changing (and has changed through the years), it needed to be covered. It is difficult to assess OVAs or ONAs based off their classification alone, so I made sure to ask around to see what was considered a show and what was a film. It becomes wildly difficult to sort through hundreds of OVAs and decide if they are considered their own shows entirely or if they were films or just supplemental episodes. Indeed, some of these projects often get argued on what they are, so I will attempt to sort through the listings as best as I can. As it stands now, the shows that are from popular, LEGAL streaming options (such as Amazon Prime and Netflix) will make the list in the later years. I have tried my best to ask around for the earlier years to ensure I keep it as fair as possible. Just be aware if this list diverges a bit, this is likely the area it does. After sorting every season, most legal streaming shows came up under “TV” classification anyway. If your favorite show isn’t listed, keep in mind I did count full 12-13 episode series that were legally available for ONA/OVAs, however most of them were below the 8.0 rating to be named.
  • Continuing anime (more than 12-13 episodes) will be assigned to their first season they are aired. A series that takes a few seasons off before pushing out a new project will not be penalized for this since the project is considered new. It will only be shows spanning consecutive seasons that will fall into this rule.
  • I will be using as many English titles for shows as possible...please don’t be mad at me.

If you have a specific season you are interested in, feel free to just search for the season (“Season 201x”). If you want to leap ahead to the very end with round-up stats, just search for “Awards & Discussion”.

Spring 2010 has proven to be the best overall season, as well as the one with the most shows in the 8.0-8.99 score! I noticed that that season in particular has an abnormal amount of titles with exclamation points in their titles, too. The Summer had quite a few “good” rating shows, but nothing hit the 8.0 range. It also currently has the lowest QAR out of anything so far- we will see if it continues.

What a year for anime! This year saw a whopping three titles with over a 9.0 rating as well as being plenty crowded for “good” scores on a consistent basis. With such a busy field for popular anime, it must be surprising to some that Fate/Zero was edged out by anohana on the popularity votes, but by just looking at the kind of shows this year had, coming in right off the podium is an accomplishment in and of itself! It is wild to consider just how many people considered themselves fans of the Fall 2011 shows as well- definitely has to be the most popular season so far.

This year had solid numbers with consistency across the year. We had some very popular titles (as the top five shows) make their debut, however there were way too many well known shows to list that also made their way into the “good” scores. What this year lacked in slam dunk scores, it made up for in quantity of memorable titles statistically.

This is a really solid year in that there is a ton of consistency in both QAR and “great” shows season-to-season. It was rather comical to see Tokyo Ghoul:re fight with Death March for the worst rated show in the top five for a given season in popularity. For a season with so many high notes, it is notable that there are two (three if you want to include the other season of Tokyo Ghoul:re) poorly ranked popular shows.

Despite not popping out with any amazing statistics here, the year stayed rather consistent. Our “great” results being a three-way tie are very indicative of this. Time will tell if those who are “catching up” on a year of anime will shift the ratings, but the numbers seem to suggest this is the picture we will see for the year. This year also saw a bout between two previous years’ most popular series with One Punch Man winning out (snapping the three year streak of My Hero Academia)

Awards & Discussion

So, after a long journey across a decade worth of seasonal anime, I found myself very grateful that I decided to use a system like the QAR. If we played based off of season-to-season average MAL scores, outliers would have simply wrecked these results. I am well aware of the flaws using a source like MAL brings and will take my lumps there, but the data is still informative. Below I have sorted several different categories for the sake of having the knowledge and to encourage further discussion about the decade of anime. Did your favorite anime season fall where you thought it would? What were your favorites from the particular years? Let’s discuss!

  • The average yearly QAR was 111.8
  • The average seasonal QAR was 27.95
  • Winter anime averaged a QAR score of 22.7 points, 4.1 shows in the “8.00-8.99" range, and 14.5 shows in the “7.00-7.99" range
  • Spring anime averaged a QAR score of 31.4 points, 6.1 shows in the “8.00-8.99" range, and 17.9 shows in the “7.00-7.99" range
  • Summer anime averaged a QAR score of 25 points, 4 shows in the “8.00-8.99" range, and 17.9 shows in the “7.00-7.99" range
  • Fall anime averaged a QAR score of 32.7 points, 6.8 shows in the “8.00-8.99" range, and 17 shows in the “7.00-7.99" range

All 9.0+ Shows, Sorted by MAL Rating

  • Compared to most categories, it would be difficult to list out the “most 9.0+ shows in a season” since Spring 2011 brought us both Steins;Gate (9.12) and Gintama Season 2 (9.04) while several seasons tied for having one show. Rather than show a four-way tie, I decided to just list the shows themselves in MAL score order along with the season they came from.
  1. Steins;Gate (9.12) - Spring 2011
  2. Hunter x Hunter (2011) (9.11) - Fall 2011

So there you have it! If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading. I made sure to cover as many details as possible with the data gathered. It is my hopes that if you have discussions with friends or write articles about anime this decade, my research here will be able to be of some use. If you do, all I ask is that you give me a quick shout-out on whatever medium you are using. My Twitter is @DilKokoro and you can also link to my Kinja page. Feel free to ask me questions or if you would like me to clarify on any details.

This might sound sappy, but I want to dedicate this research to two very important things in my life. First, my close family from AniTAY- thank you for your support through some of the worst years of my life as I grew and climbed up. Second, I just want to dedicate a part of this to my best friend I’ve ever had, my Golden Retriever, Cooper. Cooper passed away this month after blessing me with 13 long years of unconditional love. I don’t think I ever deserved the amount of support that he gave me, and there will never be another dog like him. Life has been a bit harder without him waiting for me at the door after my runs.
