Funimation has just stated that Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ has become one of the highest-grossing anime films of all time.
For the three-day weekend total, the film brought in $1.81 Million, bringing its total North American gross to a staggering $5.97 Million. With Saturday’s result, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ became the first independent film to make the Top 10 list of highest grossing anime films domestically.
The top ten films to achieve this feat are:
- Pokemon: The First Movie
- Pokemon: The Movie 2000
- Yu-Gi-Oh: The Movie
- The Secret World of Arietty
- Pokemon 3: The Movie
- Spirited Away
- Digimon: The Movie
- Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’
- The Wind Rises
To be honest, I’m not really surprised. Considering the size of DBZ’s fanbase, it was only natural that the film would succeed.
Some comments from Funimation’s staff:
“It’s a great film that loyal DBZ fans, and fans of anime, have helped push into the record books in just 6 days. Great word of mouth, extremely positive reviews, plus a film that appeals to core fans and is creating new fans, have led to sold-out shows, repeat viewings, and additional theaters being added through Wednesday.” - Michael DuBoise, EVP and COO of FUNimation.
“Based on the unprecedented success of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F,’ hundreds of theater locations are being added this week to meet demand. Don’t miss out on your chance to see this record-breaking movie, as it will be ending its theatrical run this week.” - David Wengrod, VP of Theatrical Distribution for FUNimation.
