Two shows a week is really rough. By the way, expect my Mayoiga and ConRev reviews for next week to be late, I’m going to have a busy weekend. Anyway, ConRev thoughts ahead!

A mysterious woman is using her singing powers to try and unmask someone she’s looking for. I didn’t know we were in Phantom World again! All kidding aside, the events here follow closely after the climax of the previous episode. Judas is back! And he’s a doctor caring for superhumans, what a guy! Here we get to the heart of the episode, our former Angel Stars of Episode 6 and 12 fame. Now before I dive into them, we get a shot as Judas opens the fridge of a blood sample that I’m almost positive is taken from Jiro. Looking closely, the sample seems to be taken from October, 1971 which I believe would correlate with the 46th year of the Shinka Era, or right around the same time as our main incident last episode.

I’ve had the Osaka Earth Expo sitting on my timeline for a while now, and was never sure whether that would be important or not, but here we are! Fittingly, it was mentioned the same episode that the Angel Stars were introduced. Jiro meets the Fumers and Daishi Akita again, But Akita turns on his Fumer accomplices in favor of helping Jiro. And so they become Jiro’s new locks on his power. Called it! Some gorgeous sakuga in this scene also.

There’s a lot more that we need to know about the Bureau’s inception, particularly with Jiro’s father/the Doctor, Hyouma/Jaguar-san and Akita. Speaking of, The Doctor is a really interesting character that we haven’t really seen or heard enough from, whereas we’ve now heard the motives from the other two. He’s been taking care of Jiro and Emi, but he’s also been testing Jiro’s blood as well. He’s running the Bureau after Akita got unmasked, but he’s also had some history with the Taito Inc boss.

Meanwhile at the Taito Inc. headquarters, Daitetsu Maki is prominently displayed, and so is someone named Jacky, who we’ll come back to in a bit. Like Emi said, the military wants to make weapons out of superhumans, Taito Inc. wants to make that sweet cash money from them, and the Superhuman Bureau wants to protect them. Or do they? Jiro and his faction is certainly fighting for their freedom, whereas the Bureau is seemingly teetering between justice for superhuman standards or by the government’s point of view.

Halftime! Have another glorious Kikko pic.

The Angel Stars were formerly under Taito Inc’s control, following the popular flow for that money before. Jiro tries to rationalize this as their own sense of justice but Haruka Aki laughs this off with the quote of the episode, “Justice, that’s just nonsense ... Our parent’s went to war for this nation’s justice. But they lost. Two sides, believing that they are right”. It’s a perfect explanation and in a nutshell everything that Concrete has been preaching to us since the first episode.

Haruka, the Angel Stars keytarist, and Funny, the Angel Stars drummer, were dating, until that relationship was considered scandalous and Funny committed suicide! There’s a whole dissertation that can be had here about LGBTQ relationships in Japan, Suicide but also Idol culture as well. I’m nowhere near qualified to talk about those, and even if I did, this isn’t the place for it. Suffice to say that Concrete never stays away from complicated issues that not just Japan but the whole world was dealing with (and still is today!).

Something potentially interesting is that Master Ultima is actually a cross between a Fumer and a human. In what little we’ve seen of him, he certainly doesn’t look or feel human. Haruka rages at Jiro while we get the season 1 ED playing in the background, which I love, but at the same time Emi remarks that Judas must have tested some of Jiro’s blood in Haruka. The more frightening thing is that Emi can somehow tell this by sight alone. Another thing to remember for later episodes.

Give me a moment, while I recover from seeing Equus with a scarf too!

All seems to be stable when Satomi/Taito Inc. Boss appears again, this time with Jacky in tow. Now, based on her appearance and that her powers also revolve around her singing, I’m going to bet that she is the former lead singer of the Angel Stars, who stuck around for whatever reason. Akita in his dying moment reveals a potential bombshell: Rainbow Knight wasn’t a superhuman after all, but a normal human. Leaving aside the potential Batman connections, there’s just so much more things to be revealed about the Bureau’s inception that we’ll have to wait for.

I genuinely have no idea who the group in the next episode preview is. Oh well, we’ll get to see Kikko in her magical girl costume again!

These first two episodes have been an amazing start to The Last Song, and we’re slowly filling in all of the questions that the first season brought up, along the way bringing up a variety of social issues that the entire world is still dealing with today. Some people may want some more depth to these, but I’m just happy that they’re being acknowledged, particularly in a medium that doesn’t get too controversial to begin with. I can’t imagine that those of you who are still hanging around with me aren’t enjoying this as much as I am.

Again, because of the size of the timeline, each week’s new additions will be in all bold from now on, to help guide viewers. I’m also going to be severely cutting down on images to only the episodes most relevant to the current episode. Hope this helps.
