Hello AniTAY! The new year has come and gone, and I’m late in getting this up. The holidays were an incredibly busy time for me but we’re back and we are going to look at what our community thought was the best anime of last year 2017!
If you remember from my post last year, I asked our community what their top five anime of 2016 were, and tallied up the anime with the most votes. The 2016 winners were a tie between Konosuba Season 1 and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. However, this year in order to make the list more interesting and informative, I not only asked our contributors to instead give a top 10, but to list them from #1 to #10. The idea being that points will be awarded to these shows based on where they ranked, with #1 getting 10 points and #10 getting 1 point. You get the idea?
Anyway, I had 22 different lists from 22 different community members (including yours truly), but we ended up with 59 different shows getting awarded points! So in the interest of space (and time), we’re going to go through the bottom part of our list, and save the highest scorers and most loved shows for a Part 2 coming sometime next week! We’ll go through #25-#59 here and save the Top 24 for that Part 2.
So with that, let’s see what got mentions and shoutouts from AniTAY!
Tied for 58th. Tenshi no 3P - 1 point
Tied for 58th. Kings Avatar - 1 point
Thank you for coming you two! Kings Avatar was surprisingly our highest rated and only Chinese anime to grace this list. Tenshi no 3P, I don’t know anything about this show at all so let’s move on.
Tied for 53rd. In Another World With My Smartphone - 2 points
Tied for 53rd. Kino’s Journey - 2 points
Tied for 53rd. KADO: The Right Answer- 2 points
Tied for 53rd. Interviews with Monster Girls- 2 points
Tied for 53rd. Aho Girl - 2 points
A couple of comedies earned sadly low scores here. Monster Girls and Aho Girl provided some solid laughs, though not enough for our responders. Kino’s Journey seemed to disappoint people who were anticipating more from it. KADO from what I have heard sort of fell apart after a strong beginning. And Smartphone only appears here because one of our degenerates is trash.
Tied for 49th. Tsugumomo - 3 points
Tied for 49th. The Royal Tutor - 3 points
Tied for 49th. Knight’s & Magic - 3 points
Tied for 49th. Danmachi - Sword Oratoria - 3 points
Some more low points from our community. Never change AniTAY. Danmachi seems to have gone underwatched amongst us as well, though whether that’s for better or worse will remain unknown.
Tied for 45th. Sakura Quest - 5 points
Tied for 45th. Kizumonogatari III - 5 points
Tied for 45th. Fate/stay night Movie: Heaven’s Feel - I. Presage Flower - 5 points
Tied for 45th. Alice and Zouroku - 5 points
A few movies from huge franchises show up here. Sadly, movies are hard to go see for a big portion of our community, but they at least get some representation here. Meanwhile Sakura Quest didn’t hit the lofty heights of previous P.A. Works shows, which may have soured some people, but I thought it was good! Meanwhile Alice and Zouroku seemed to go under the radar.
Tied for 42nd. A Silent Voice - 6 points
Tied for 42nd. Fastest Finger First - 6 points
Tied for 42nd. Magical Circle Guru Guru - 6 points
I can’t wait until I can see A Silent Voice. The manga is one of the very few I actually read through. Fastest Finger First took tropes from the many sports anime that came before it, and performed adequately. Meanwhile, if you haven’t heard about Guru Guru and odds are you haven’t, you should give it a chance. It is far more than its cover, and is a worthy comedy/parody in its own right.
Tied for 38th. How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend Season 2 - 7 points
Tied for 38th. New Game Season 2 - 7 points
Tied for 38th. Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler - 7 points
Tied for 38th. Attack on Titan Season 2 - 7 points
Several sequels show up here. Sorry fanboys, but we aren’t big fans of Titans around here. NG+ and Boring Girlfriend expanded on their first seasons, and Kakegurui gave us the hammiest of ham VA performances and was a fun summer watch.
Tied for 35th. In this Corner of the World - 8 points
Tied for 35th. Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga - 8 points
Another movie that I’ve heard good things about. Blue Exorcist also seemed to repair the damage it did with it’s original anime ending of the first season. Shounen lovers will undoubtedly have a good time with it.
34th. Gamers - 9 points
Misunderstandings the Anime!
Tied for 31st. Gintama (2017) - 10 points
Tied for 31st. Little Witch Academia - 10 points
Tied for 31st. Tsuredure Children - 10 points
Tied for 31st. Kemono Friends - 10 points (1 first)
The Internet’s Favorite Show, unfortunately only had one person watching in our community. We’re sorry Kemono Friends. It’s joined here by Gintama, a show that I am woefully behind on, Little Witch Academia, which seemed to improve greatly as it went along, and Tsuredure Children, one of the funniest anime to grace us this year. And a short to boot!
30th. WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us? - 11 points
This is the Title that Never Ends....This was an interesting watch, though our resident Exile would tell you that the source material is far better. An emotional journey to be sure. It would have greatly benefited from more time but oh well.
29th. Welcome to the Ballroom - 12 points
A Great Watch! Ballroom improved for me immensely when a new character was introduced about halfway through. Fun, exciting and gripping sports drama, don’t be turned away by the power of The Dance!
Tied for 27th. Juuni Taisen: Zodiac War - 13 points
Tied for 27th. Konohana Kitan - 13 points
A tale of two anime going in different directions. Konohana Kitan seemed to improve with every new episode, while Zodiac War seemed to be getting more and more predictable. Granted, that’s just my opinion, and plenty of people clearly enjoyed both.
26th. Land of the Lustrous - 14 points
What? Checks notes again. Wait really guys? This low? C’mon. Easily the best 3D CG anime we’ve ever gotten, Lustrous wow-ed me over and over again. My 2nd favorite anime of the Fall Season (My #1 of Fall is in Part Two!), I’m disappointed in how many of us didn’t watch this gem. Pun definitely intended.
25th. Just Because - 15 points
And with our final show of Part One, Just Because was a great depiction of that time between exams and graduation where things seem to be coming to an end, and new chapters are on the horizon. Also highly recommended from me.
Well there you have it! I’ll get to the Top 24 as soon as I can. Thoughts? What shows are you anticipating in Part Two? Any disappointments or surprises? Feel free to discuss in the comments!
