A Year of AniTAY

Illustration for article titled A Year of AniTAY

Good Afternoon everyone, I just wanted to write a quick thing about my year here on this lovely site. I wrote my first article while on the bullet train from Seoul, a week after returning to South Korea for work. I had been encouraged by those close to me to try to put my writing out somewhere on a forum or club that would share like minded interests as to whatever I was writing about in hopes for feedback and discussion. I had been reading AniTAY for a while, with my first time reading an AniTAY review by a guy named The Messiah. I remember calling my mother on Skype (only way I could communicate while international) and telling her how it would be a “dream come true” to get to publish an official AniTAY review. I know people use that kind of stuff lightly, but this site was on par with Kotaku and IGN for me (heck, I’d say I read here more than the other two combined). I eagerly read the new previews and read through the question of the weeks like they were the Sunday comics.

I never thought I would get authorship on here, let alone get to host one of all of those events I clung to in rough times.

I’m sure I raised a few eyebrows by opening up so soon to everyone in our author’s chat and whatnot, but I was just so dang eager. I’ve never been one to stray away from my passion for whatever I do, so the last thing I’d want to do is pretend to be someone else. Usually this kept me out of social groups, but I fit right in with AniTAY. I got tons of comments and tweets from readers and other writers who liked what I had to bring (particularly when I started Dubs w/ Dil) and was really excited to write more and more. I even got to write for Taykobon and guest on two anime podcasts (hoping for the third soon). I’ve written while staying in three separate countries and five locations pretty far apart due to my job, but everywhere I went my writing was appreciated. That really gave a reassuring feeling.

Most importantly, I befriended some fantastic people. First was arguing New York basketball in the middle of a viewing of Akira with Gugsy and staying up playing Overwatch on the PS4 with MaelwysSC113. By the time I was living here in Tampa, FL, I was having long anime discussions with people who had nothing to do with AniTAY and rekindling old friendships with voice actors I worked with amateurly who went pro. The whole year really went by unexpectedly in that regard, and I am incredibly grateful for that, too.

I know I have changed my career path quite a few times in the past year, but I am really comfortable with my decisions now. I am looking forward to getting to continue my hobby of writing in free time on here and outside with others whilst gaining the skills needed to make a difference in lives. I always told people if one person can be eased by my writing, that is all the more I need to justify writing my articles. Now I can continue to do just that and be right at home with the people I love and still get to have my career.

I know this is sort of out there, but if you’re reading this, I’m really happy to have you in my life. You might be another writer, my family, or just a reader who likes my stuff...but thank you. I’m going to keep doing my best every day and you should too. I’m so genuinely happy to be a part of this community and I want nothing but the best for all of us here. I just had to get this off of my chest. Anyways, I hope you all have a fantastic day and bless you.
