From the director/writer of 5 Centimeters per Second, the animator of Tokyo Godfathers and the character designer of Anohana...
Against the backdrop of the fall of a comet, Kimi no na wa. (Your Name.) tells the story of a young man named Taki, who is bored with his life in the big city and longs for more. One night, he finds himself dreaming that he is a young girl living in the countryside. On the other hand, Mitsuba, a young girl fed up with her rural life, dreams of herself as a young man living in the city. The film will explore the relationship between these literal star-crossed lovers. The poster’s tagline reads: “I am searching for you, whom I have never met yet.”
Known for his visually striking and poetic films, anime auteur Makoto Shinkai’s new film is sure to leave viewers in a state of awe and heartbreak. Seemingly in an attempt to enhance those feelings, he’s teaming up with Masashi Ando - who worked on quite a few Studio Ghibli films and was the animation director on Tokyo Godfathers, one of the late Satoshi Kon’s many masterpieces - and character designer Masayoshi Tanaka of Anohana fame. If this isn’t enough to get you excited, maybe this trailer will whet your appetite?
The film is slated to be released in August 2016 in Japanese theatres. There’s no word yet on a Western release, but given that Shinkai’s other works have all been released in the West as well, I’d say we can be optimistic.
