The executive committee for the annual Tokyo Anime Award Festival announced yesterday the nominees for its Anime of the Year awards, with the winners being announced during the Festival when takes place from March 18th through the 21st. To be eligible, a work had to be a film or TV series that was released or aired between November 1st, 2014 and October 31st, 2015. With that said, here are this year’s nominees:

Theatrical Film Category:

The Anthem of the Heart (A-1 Pictures, 2015)

The Boy and the Beast (Studio Chizu, 2015)

Expelled from Paradise (Graphinica, 2014)

Love Live! The School Idol Movie (Sunrise, 2015)

TV Anime Category:

Mr. Osomatsu (Studio Pierrot, 2015)

One Punch Man (Madhouse, 2015)

Shirobako (P.A.Works, 2014)

Your Lie in April (A-1 Pictures, 2014)

Overall, compared to last year, I feel this is a much stronger group of nominees, especially on the TV series side of things. That said, I must wonder why Shirobako and Your Lie in April weren’t nominated last year, if OPM and Osomatsu managed to qualify for this year’s award, despite only airing for a month in the eligibility window. I mean surely they could have bumped Yokai Watch and Love Live! Season 2 for these two shows? Anyways, unlike last year where I had clear favorites as to who I wanted to win, this year is much harder. I honestly can’t pick between OPM, Shirobako, and Osomatsu for the TV category, as for the film category, as long as Anthem or Beast wins, I’m good.
