We’re back baby! The whole gang is here: Jiro, Furuuota, Kikko, Emi, Detective Raito! Episode 14 discussion + timeline of 1-14 ahead.

It’s been a long couple of months, but the conclusion to Concrete Revolutio is finally here! The first season focused mostly on the events leading up to Jiro’s departure from the Bureau, with some hints at the future conflicts between both sides. This episode seems to now be focusing on the opposite: The conflict between both sides with brief flashbacks to help remind us.

We start with Jiro meeting with Detective Raito a couple weeks after their epic class over the Megasshin incident in Episode 3. There is some news about a certain radical Superhuman Revolutionary Army and their clash with security forces. While this may (and probably will) come into play later, for now these scenes serve to show us of the tentative friendship/alliance between the two. However, the more important and more interesting part of the episode takes place only a half year before this.

By the 46th year of the Shinka Era, the Bureau has more or less been merged with the civilian police force called the Superhuman Security Services and placed under the jurisdiction of the national security department. Curiously, we get a glimpse of the Taito Inc. at their training exercises but nothing more. Also, Daitetsu Maki is now working with the Bureau and he will have his eventual clash from Episode 8 with Jiro and Earth-chan a year from then.

Detective Raito, as part of the police has now joined forces with the Bureau, but has his world view shaken by a number of revelations we find out later in the episode. His sense of Justice has always led to him stopping superhuman criminals and arresting them, but under the new leadership it seems that superhumans are now being killed instead. This conflict comes to a head when the “android warrior from space” and aspiring cowboy Yusei Washizu comes waltzing in on his trusty steed ... er flying saucer.

Washizu’s been sent by a coalition of alien species (Remember Mr. Ultima? Also an alien, though not an android) to capture the remaining S-Planetarians, namely the one Jiro let go in Episode 1. Kikko also gets outed for meeting with Jiro and the S-Planetarian from the flash forward of Episode 1. A joint investigation by Washizu and the Bureau is conducted, and a trap set for Jiro and the S-Planetarian.

Students are protesting the construction of a new Ogasawara (That of Episodes 12 and 13 fame), where the Japanese and American governments can conduct secret experiments and testing to quarantine superhumans and control them. The demonstrations collapse though as the Bureau reveals their attempt to cause destruction and blame it on the students. I can’t help but think of other authoritarian regimes (as well as some secret operations conducted for the “greater good”. USA! USA!) doing anything to keep power and control over their populace.

The S Planetarian is captured, Jiro uses Kikko’s love (Damnit all! Poor Kikko!) to retake his Equus and free the S Planetarian, and Detective Raito’s internal debate about his justice leads him to coming to blows with and eventually killing Washizu, who he perceived as his naive former self, “Back when I had no questions”.

All in all, it’s an incredible spiral we see from Raito, someone we called one of the most human characters in our review of the first season, to have his contradictions complicate his worldview and ultimately force him to make an impossible decision. Again and again, we see that those who had such concrete (pun intended) definitions of justice and right vs. wrong struggle when there is no true and easy right & wrong, black & white sides in this world. Remember Earth-chan’s struggles back in Episode 7, or Raito’s own initial conflicts in Episode 3.

Now, at some point between this and their semi-friendly meeting 6 months later, Raito gets dumped by the police and starts acting along with the Superhuman Revolutionary Army. What I also failed to mention is that Jiro is now not using Emi’s locks to control his powers but Fumers. If you remember, Fumers are an alien species of which the former elderly chief Daishi Akita was one. Emi remarks that it seems like Akita is still protecting Jiro even now (And indeed, if you remember, the colors of the Fumers match the colors of Akita and the other 2 Fumers he met with frequently) and Jiro seems to have a little more control over his powers than before, if not full control. We can’t be sure that the Fumers aren’t trying to use Jiro just yet, but we’ll leave that question for a later date.

Now for the preview. We get glimpses of more of the Taito Inc head, Jiro and Equus, Emi and Kikko bonding and even Judas (Episode 7). But the more ominous one is the end of the Angel Stars who were the allies of Taito Inc during the Mountain Horses adventure (Episode 6). This episode has lived up to my hype, and I can’t wait to see more. Even if I have to blog two shows on the same day ... >_<
