I’ve had a whirlwind weekend, but Concrete continues chugging along. Some fun with flowers this week as the pieces of the Timeline start connecting together.

I’ll try and keep this relatively short, as I’ve been pretty busy in real life. My Fridays are also going to be somewhat busy for me in the near future. If you’ve been keeping up with my Mayoiga write-ups, I’m going to do a post about both last week and the new episode this week so forgive me.

Concrete: Last Song has had a number of really good episodes this cour, and has continued succeeding at presenting its core ideas and themes in a more cohesive manner than they did in the first cour. That said, a lot of them have opened up even more threads and questions into an already convoluted story. I’ve been really waiting for an episode to start connecting pieces from the first cour and start showing us the end game, and this one actually delivered!

While we’re learning about Human-Man (and the demon from underground who was arrested. Those arrests probably led to the tensions that sparked last week’s Devila and Devilo incidents!) , we’re also treated to the finale of the battle between Daitetsu Maki and Jiro from way back in Episode 8. The Maki’s mecha, the Rex FE, is actually the successor to the Arcus, which was the big mech from Episode 14, where Detective Raito had his crisis and eventually stole the chip and joined Jiro. And we finally got a little scene with Jiro and his current co-conspirators Detective Raito, Judas and Earth-chan!

We saw humans suddenly develop superhero powers in Episode 6 with the Mountain Horses, but that seemed to be through the influence of other superheroes. But now, we learn that this invasive flower species is also capable of spreading superhero powers all over Japan at great inconvenience to most people. (Allow me a little bit of fan fiction and pretend that My Hero Academia and its population of 80% superheroes is an extension and a possible future of Concrete if everything ends up OK. Let’s call it the Good End of Concrete). I liked that the Canada Goldenrods actually have a real-life scientific explanation in Allelopathy for why they are so invasive and prevalent. I can only imagine that Japan and the US in Concrete are already hard at work trying to study these plants off-screen for more nefarious schemes.

Speaking of Episode 6, it seems that Imperial Ads Inc. still has Nainorin and they’re already testing it in children. Yikes. Sadly, this all leads to the Security Forces using their strong arm tactics against Human-Man, who only wants to be a superhero for the admiration of his daughter and nothing else. It’s a noble desire, but like Ullr said, he’s endangering the lives of many other people who are being hurt by the spread of these superhero powers.

But right when all the players are about to do battle, that first season ED kicks in wonderfully and, oh wow, it’s the Queen Tartaros Bugmen from way back in Episode 2! Definitely did not see that coming. Kikko tells us via voice over that the 48th year was called the Superhuman Explosion, and yet all we know about the 48th year so far is from that Episode 2 with Fuuruota, Jiro and the Queen. So while these first episodes of Last Song have been expertly weaving it’s story into the gaps left by the first cour, we may be heading into uncharted territory going forward.

Next episode promises an Iron Mask, but more curiously to me, Detective Raito and Hyouma (The tiger cat dude in the Bureau) flying a plane together?! I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
