Since I started this series of posts a couple of months ago, I have ended each by asking for suggestions for future questions. So far I have only received one such suggestion, but luckily it is a good one. So, this week’s question from spillthebeans is: what anime recently made you think to yourself, what the hell am I watching?! And what was that moment?
Important caveat to this question, it needs to be from an anime that you like. So no relying on a horrible show to provide your WTF moment.
For me the answer would emphatically be Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei Herz!, a show with not only an absolutely ridiculous name, but with an absurdly executed plot to match. Basically, and I use that term very loosely, Fate/Illya is a magical girls show that takes place in an alternate version of the Nasuverse were the Fourth Holy Grail War turned out very different. Staring the titular Illyaviel von Einzbern, it is at the same time so much more than a magical girls show and so much less, as the first half of the third season has been more slice of life than anything else.
*This next bit has spoilers for the show, so if you care, don’t continue reading*
So my moment is actually an entire episode, the third from this season which has the lovely title of Girls, Life is Short, so Rot Away! After one of Illya’s friends, Mimi, witnesses Illya “resupplying” her kind-of twin sister Kuro with mana, she has been unable to stop thinking about it and tries, unsuccessfully, to create an outlet for her conflicted feelings by writing yuri fiction about her friends. As Mimi continues to struggle, she gets inspiration from a conversation with Illya and the rest of the girls to gender swap all of her friends and write BL fiction instead. Reminder: This is a magical girls show. As Mimi quickly falls further and further into the rabbit hole of writing BL, the episode culminates in an intervention that gives Illya and a couple other girls a crash course in BL. As enjoyable as its action and characters can be, it is really these WTF moments that make Fate/Illya what it is. Proceed with caution.
Last week’s question:
If you have any ideas for future questions of the week feel free to leave them in the comments, otherwise, see you next Friday.
